Ladies’ Day at the Cheltenham Festival

Four of the British Royal Ladies showed their support for the Cheltenham Festival today with their attendance at the Ladies’ Day Races- I believe all wore new hats. The Duchess of Cornwall, who attended the races with her son Tom, wore another one of her faux fur brimmed wool slouchy hats. This one, in a warm caramel colour, suits her well. While I’m still not a fan of this slouchy, informal hat, I must concede it is fitting for a day in the country at the races.

Princess Anne wore a similar style hat in brown velvet and green tweed plaid. I feel the same way about this hat as I do about Camilla’s furry hat cousin although I have to give Princess Anne props for her cheeky addition of the horse pin to this hat. Brilliant.

Zara Phillips wore a new statement hat in deep eggplant purple. The swirled shape of the hat, trimmed with curling black feather spines and brass beads, was reminiscent of a dollop of grape ice cream but worked well. Deliciously well.

Autumn Phillips looked marvelously chic in what the designer describes as a “navy asymmetric fur felt trilby with a downturned brim, trimmed with an ‘old gold’ grosgrain ribbon and gold buckle with hot pink silk lining”. Autumn wears fedoras and trilby hats so well and I loved the colour contrast of this one, especially worn as she did with her navy coat and caramel faux fur scarf.

All in all, this was a lovely day of new royal hats today at the Cheltenham races, don’t you think?

British Royals at Commonwealth Observance

Members of the British Royal Family congregated at Westminister Abbey today for the annual Commonwealth Observance Service. Queen Elizabeth stood out in her beautiful watermelon pink rose hat (voted by you, dear readers, as one of your top 10 favourite royal hats last year). I always think she looks bright, cheery and so very lovely in this hat.

The Duchess of Cornwall debuted a new piece of millinery today. This hat featured a calot style base of ecru wool edged in monochrome wool leaves that swept around the hat to a tall peak. I’m not sure if this hat was supposed to look like a Roman crown of laurel leaves (think Caesar) or remind us of the spiky circle on the Commonwealth Flag but the odd shape and bland colour make me want to send this hat to a gardener to be pruned.

The Countess of Wessex repeated a beautiful cocktail hat with lace covered base and large looped bow. I thought it was a lovely compliment to her tailored coat dress and she looked beautiful. Perhaps some colour next time, Sophie?

Today’s lovely royal hats seemed to create a lovely cream background against which Queen Elizabeth’s hat really stood out. Which one of the hats in this trio was your favourite?

Christmas Day With the Walses

The Queen was accompanied by her family to the Church of St. Mary Magdalene near the Sandringham Estate yesterday for Christmas Day service. As per tradition, the ladies were all in hats. The Duchess of Cornwall repeated a marine blue wool picture hat with tilted brim and square crown. I am really torn on this hat- on one hand, it is a beautiful shape and the colour is magnificent. But that unusual “rope” of coordinating wool felt wrapped around the crown looks like a giant sausage and I want so badly to remove it.

The Duchess of Cambridge unveiled a new hat, made by Gina Foster. This emerald green hard shell beret with large bow coordinated beautifully with her Alexander McQueen plaid coat. It’s a little cutesy but the whole look was very festive and I thought Kate looked great in green. What do you think of these two hats?

Christmas Card from Clarence House

Clarence House, the London home of The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, released the couple’s Christmas card earlier this week. It features Charles and Camilla in two lovely hats, enjoying the second day of Ascot back on June 19 this year. It’s a lovely photo of the couple made all the lovelier with their two beautiful hats.

Duchess of Cornwall Awards Service Medals

The Duchess of Cornwall  presented medals to soldiers from the 4th Battalion The Rifles to mark their return from Afghanistan at their barracks in Bulford yesterday. For this engagement, Camilla repeated her slouchy black hat with faux fur upturned brim. If this hat looks very familiar you are quite correct- Camilla has this same hat in chocolate brown, in grey, in lighter brown, in medium brown, in brown tweed and in black (the other black version has a bushier faux fur brim). To own the same hat in six versions obviously shows that the Duchess is mad about this hat. I’m afraid I can’t say the same thing as the top is just too slouchy for me to fall in love with. What do you think about this one?
