British Royals Host Scottish Garden Party

Queen Elizabeth marked the fifth day of her ‘Holyrood Week’ of engagements in Scotland yesterday with numerous investitures and a garden party hosted at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. For these events, she repeated a butter yellow straw hat trimmed with silk roses surrounded by green silk and yellow organza leaves. The silk flowers on this piece are exquisitely made (don’t they look picked fresh from the royal garden?!) and the subtle pattern woven into the parasissal straw gives a little bit of interest to the design’s simple shape. We have seen the Queen in several new yellow hats of recent and I think this one of the top.

The Duke of Edinburgh and the Earl of Wessex both looked dapper in their go-to grey felt and black silk top hats (Prince Philip’s teal tie with grey vest and hat make such a handsome combination). Princess Anne repeated the blue straw hat with diagonal crown, mushroom brim and maribou feather hat band that she unveiled at Ascot a few weeks ago. While all the trimming frou-frou on this hat makes it perfectly suitable for a garden party, I’m afraid I’m still not warming to this hat. Between the overtrimming and the odd dent on the front left side of the brim, this hat doesn’t cut it for me.

All in all a good day of hats for the British royals in Scotland, wouldn’t you agree?

Closer Look: The Green Mirman Flowered Turban

Royal HatsAnother one of Queen Elizabeth’s instantly recognisable hats from the past is her green turban with kerchief draped back, studded with white silk flowers made by Simone Mirman.

Initially worn during a 1977 trip to New Zealand, the hat is now part of ‘Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen’s Wardrobe’ on display this summer. The Royal Collection Trust recently released this short video of it:

This video gives the first clear view of the back of this hat I have ever seen- a back I imagined would be much different (more flowing folds and less awkward bumps). While the shape of the back is a bit disappointing, it’s a great look at this famous piece of royal millinery.
What do you think of this design, now that we’ve had a closer look?

Queen Elizabeth Kicks Off Holyrood week

Queen Elizabeth arrived in Edinburgh on Friday to begin an annual week of engagements in Scotland. For her arrival, she repeated her lilac-grey straw hat with gently sloped crown and raised brim, trimmed with straw roses and bow loops in the same hue. It’s a hat of beautiful proportion and detail and the Queen wears it very well.

On Saturday, the Queen delivered a speech from the throne to officially open the fifth session of Scottish Parliament. For this event, which saw her joined by the Duke of Edinburgh, she repeated a boater hat with lacy patterned white straw crown and pale aqua brim, trimmed with aqua feathers and organza bows. While this hat is slowly growing on me and I have come to accept its pale, minty colour scheme, I’m still not on board with the fussy trim.

For Sunday service at Canongate Kirk, Queen Elizabeth repeated a design affectionately nicknamed “The Union Jack Hat”. In bright blue straw, the design features another tall crown (very similar in shape to the first hat above), a downward facing brim and a large, twisted blue bow edged in cherry red piping. This design leans more to the whimsical side of things (without falling into silliness) and I find myself smiling as widely as the wearer herself every time I see it.

It is often easy to tell when Angela Kelly’s designs have come from the same hat block and it’s most interesting to see the same true for the first and last pieces above, both the work of Rachel Trevor Morgan. It has been a busy weekend for Her Majesty- what do you think of these three repeated hats worn over the past three days?

Queen and Duke of Edinburgh Remember Battle of The Somme

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh atteded a service last night at Westminster Abbey marking the eve of the centenary of the Battle of The Somme. For this event, the Queen repeated her charcoal grey wool embroidered coat with matching hat in grey flannel and pale blue straw.

From the side, this hat has a much more austere look to it than most of the Queen’s hats, thanks to the tall crown and lack of embellishment. It’s when we see a view of this hat’s crown, as we do above, that I think the design really comes to life. The swirling movement of the crown around the hat’s simple, grey domed crown is incredibly striking.

The additional views we see of this hat have made me much more impressed with its design and I thought the colour and tone of the Queen’s ensemble last night hit just the right note for this reflective and sombre event. The first time we saw this ensemble, I loved the coat but had reservations about the hat. This time, my admiration extends to both pieces. What do you think of this hat on this, its second outing?
