Sunday Service at Sandringham

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were all smiles in the sunshine yesterday as they attended Sunday service at Hillington Church near their Sandringham Estate. For the occasion, the Queen repeated her sloped crown hat covered in peach bouclé with a coordinating straw brim and layered bow, fabric disk and feather trim. I often feel that when hats and clothes are constructed from the same fabric, the resulting ensemble can be rather flat  or one note. This hat’s mix of texture proves that does not have to be the case. With the number of times this hat has been worn, the Queen seems to agree.

The couple were joined by family members Viscount and Viscountess Linley. Serena topper her country tweed jacket with a black beret based cocktail hat trimmed with a mass of black feathers. We’ve seen this style of millinery often on British royals but I think the volume and placement of feathers on this piece makes it a winner.

British Royals Honour Gallipoli Centenary

Members of the British Royal family attended Sunday morning service at the Church of Mary Magdalene in Norfolk yesterday morning where the 100th anniversary of the end of the doomed First World War Gallipoli campaign was remembered. Queen Elizabeth used this occasion to début her first new hat of 2008, one of Angela Kelly’s split crown designs in winter white felt with purple trim to coordinate with her coat and dress.

Some of you may remember an earlier hat made to match this ensemble- the stylized bowler with high crown and short, upturned brim pictured below. The lavender twisted bow and tweed sash around the base of the crown on on the old hat have been relocated to the new hat and an open collar was added to Her Majesty’s coat. I always felt the proportions on the bowler hat were a little off and I think that the renovated hat and coat lend improvement to the original ensemble.

The Duchess of Cambridge attended, curiously, in the same suit and hat she wore to church two weeks ago. While I don’t think Kate needs a new ensemble for each outing, I like to see more than a fortnight pass before an outfit or hat is repeated. That being said, the ensemble is exactly the kind of thing I imagine a royal to wear during a weekend in the country and Kate is nothing if not predictable. It is nice to see her anchor one of her go-to cocktail hats with an updo for a change (a considerable improvement over this hat’s last outing).

The royal party was joined by Kate’s family (likely visiting for Kate’s birthday this weekend). Her mother Carole wore a jewel toned pillbox while her sister Pippa wore the same brown fur papakha hat that Kate wore back in 2006 (bottom right), before she and William were married.

While none of today’s hats were terribly exciting, I’m curious about your thoughts on the Queen’s updated piece. Do you prefer the new hat or the original?

Queen Elizabeth Attends Church at Sandringham

Queen Elizabeth appeared at her first public outing of 2016 yesterday, attending Sunday morning service at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene near the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. She repeated a deep purple cloche variation with squared crown trimmed with a spray of purple and pink feathers. This hat features a unique diagonally wrapped crown that you can see better on previous outings here and here. From a distance, this hat looks great but I’m afraid that from a closer view,  the details (stitching, flowered fabric on the diagonal crown, spines of the feathers sticking out on the brim) and overall proportion are rather sloppy.

The Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise Windsor also attended, both sporting Jane Taylor designs (see them here). Sophie’s chic navy fedora with feather trim looked fabulous with her blue coat while Lady Louise’s black beret is a wonderful start to a long future of hat wearing.  You can see additional photos at this Daily Mail article.

British Royals Attend Church at Sandringham

Members of the British Royal Family attended church this morning at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene near the Sandringham Estate, joining the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh who regularly attend when they are in residence. For this outing, the Queen repeated her cream and gold split crown hat with black and gold feather trim (see a better view here). The wonderful texture of this piece has made it a reader favourite and and judging by the number of times she has worn it, Queen Elizabeth clearly agrees.

The Duchess of Cambridge repeated her black felt beret cocktail hat trimmed with felt leaves and chrysanthemum blooms. While Kate has worn this hat with a number of different outfits, I think its pairing today with her burgundy checked suit and tall black boots was one of its more successful outings.

The Countess of Wessex has had another stellar year of hats and her choice today therefore, was a little surprising. She repeated her burgundy felt stovepipe hat with sharply indented crown and flying knotted side sash trim. The colour is wonderfully festive (and looks beautiful against her winter white Armani coat) but the shape feels dated and awkward. I do like to see hats worn multiple times but would prefer this particularly one move into retirement. Lady Louise, in contrast, looked lovely in her classic beret.

Princess Anne repeated her red felt oversize beret trimmed in a navy-edged feather. It is a festive piece that belies its age (at least 27 years old) that Anne wears well.

Princess Beatrice repeated the black velvet beaded bumper brimmed hat she wore on Christmas Day. We don’t usually see her repeat hats so close together but as this one is a beauty, it’s not surprising to see it on the young princess again.

The stand out hat for me today was cocktail hat worn by Zara Phillips Tindall. In red felt, the beret base of the hat was trimmed with an upright knotted sash and curling feathers. With her checked black and white coat, the hat provided wonderful contrast and punch of vibrant colour.
