Queen Margrethe has been hand picking images to share during each day of Advent on the Danish Monarchy’s social media- one of the pictures this week included this one of herself and a young Princess Benedikte celebrating Santa Lucia.

Danish millinery Susanne Juul (who makes many of the hats worn by Crown Princess Mary and Princess Benedikte) celebrated her 25th anniversary this week. Congratulations!

Lovely to see Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella attend the annual palace Children’s Christmas Festival. Their mum was recently in India where this beautiful shot of her was captured.

Royal Hats

The Duchess of Cornwall and Countess of Wessex repeated a pair of black hats a week ago at the memorial service of a friend. (Camillas is by Lock & Co. and Sophie’s by Jane Taylor) You can see a gallery of photos here and at this article at the Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Standard.

Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin, Margaret Rhodes, died this weekend (BBC). If you have opportunity to read her book, The Final Curtsey, detailing her time as Woman Of The Bedchamber to her late great aunt, it is a lovely read.

Danish Opening of Parliament

The Danish royal family gathered in Copenhagen yesterday to attend the opening of their nation’s parliament. Queen Margrethe led her relations in a repeated red bumper hat with navy floral bow at the side. While I agree with many of you who would prefer a less twee embellishment on this hat, the vibrant colour certainly made Margrethe stand out in the crowd.

While I initially posted that Crown Princess Mary was the only family member in a new millinery design for this event, her hat was actually a previously worn one… with a twist.  This design is a strong shape (Mary has similar designs with square crowns and curved brims) and she carries it well. This most royal shade of purpley-blue felt is beautiful on her and the feather plume trim, a new addition on this outing that completely transformed the piece) makes a wonderful statement.

Princess Marie topped her elegant ivory coat with a pink straw fascinator. Made of a central bloom surrounded by a circle of pointed leaves, the design is trimmed with several slim feathers (far less feathers than we saw it embellished with during its first outing!). The design reads very summery to me and I think I might have preferred a repeat of the wonderful purple fedora she wore to this event last year.

Princess Benedikte repeated her brown straw hat with gently upturned brim and back bow trim. It’s a simple design but one that works well on her thanks to its lovely, warm colour- a colour that I thought was particularly wonderful with Benedikte’s blue dress and aqua wrap.

This event is one of the few on the Danish royal calendar that sees the family all together and in hats. Which designs stood out to you in particular this year?

Queen Margrethe in Wittenberg

Queen Margrethe joined German President Joachim Gauck in Wittenberg yesterday for the reopening ceremony of the All Saints’ Church. For this event, she repeated her mint green hat with cuff brim.

This remains a great design for Margrethe and the photo above shows, more clearly than we have seen before, the same silk crepe fabric on both the hat and suit. This makes for a very ‘matchy’ ensemble- something she seems to favour. This event also unveiled the altar cloth Queen Margrethe designed and hand embroidered as gift for this occasion- it’s certainly a work of art.

Wrapping Up The Danish Summer Cruise

We have a lot of royal hatted events to catch up on today, dearest readers! First up is the last leg of Queen Margrethe’s late summer cruise. Last Thursday, the the royal yacht Dannebrog sailed into Rudkøbing Harbour for a two-day visit to Langeland Municipality (see the Queen’s view of this harbour entry in the video clip below).

For the first day of this two-day visit, Queen Margrethe repeated her pink straw hat with navy floral hatband. After all the nautical red and navy she wore on this trip, the vibrant pink was a nice departure.

It feels like we’ve all said whatever there is to say about this hat already… are there any new thoughts about it?
