Queen Máxima Opens Cancer Research Institute

Queen Máxima opened the virtual Oncode Institute for cancer research during a ceremony at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam yesterday. For this event, she repeated her purple felt picture hat with upswept brim.

There is much to admire about this hat- the scale and colour are great on Máxima and the upswept brim is beautifully balanced by a gentle wave pleat on the opposite side – that it was named your top pick of the year in 2014. It’s pairing yesterday with this cherry red dress is a little unexpected but the purple stitching around the dress collar (repeated at the waist and hem) brings the two pieces together. Máxima and her stylist are no strangers to colour blocked ensembles and while this one is certainly bold, it shows how well they can pull and outfit together.

Photos of this event are scarce- pop over to this gallery by photographer Bernard Rübsamen for more views. This outing also shows the fifth ensemble paired with this hat (see the others at this post) – was it a success in your mind?

Dutch Queen Opens Bio Fair

Queen Máxima was in Zwolle this morning to officially open a bio fair. For this engagement, she wore a new hat in dark green felt with upswept ‘slice’ brim trimmed with a Petersham ribbon hatband and side bow.

There should be lots to like about this hat- it’s a tried and true shape on Queen Máxima and adds a third design to the small shelf of green hats in her millinery closet. There are a few quibbles, however- the brim fold creating the upswept brim shape is less refined than other hats in this same shape and makes the hat, from some angles at least, look a little lumpy.

Not all shades of green work together and I don’t like the dark teal undertones of this hat paired with the brighter, emerald hued dress. The vibrant bluey-purple coat saves the ensemble with unexpected contrast but when removed, the dress and coat don’t make the greatest of pairings.

Queen Máxima has so few green hats that I want to like this one- perhaps with a different outfit? What do you think of this new green hat?

Paired with her checked suit, the hat tops a strong look. What do you think of it’s outing yesterday?

Dutch Royals Continue Caribbean Visit

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima’s visit to the Caribbean continued with a number of events (and hats!) over the weekend! On Friday, the couple attend the small island of Saba’s annual “Saba Day” celebration. For this event, Queen Máxima repeated her pleated ring/bandeau headpiece in vibrant yellow silk.

In the past, I was less than complimentary about this piece but this outing- in a tropical climate and with a matching dress in the same hue, it’s great. We often remark here how hats can only be a good as the ensembles they are paired with and this headpiece finally hits its stride with this NATAN dress. It’s such a great combination.

As part of Saba Day festivities, the king and queen went scuba diving around the island. Queen Máxima looked relaxed in an informal navy sun hat.

On Saturday, the couple visited Sint Maarten to view reconstruction projects and damaged areas caused by Hurricane Irene. Queen Máxima wore an oversized fedora with large brim, monochrome hatband and side bow. While the hue of the hat looks to mimic natural straw, Josine Droogendijk over at Mode Koningin Maxima tells me that the hat, from a well known Dutch brand, is 90% paper (a much better alternative to the polypropylene/polyester commonly used for off-the-peg designs as this). The hat is another informal one but the design is again well suited to the location and nature of this visit. It’s difficult to hit the right balance of formality when pairing a hat with trousers but this hit just the right note.

Dutch Monarchs Visit Caribbean

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima arrived in the Caribbean today to visit reconstruction efforts in Dutch territories impacted by Hurricane Irma. For their arrival in Oranjestad, Saint Eustatius, Queen Máxima wore a new blue straw hat with relaxed, curved brim and a simple ribbon hatband.

The hat is a ready-to-wear item so is decidedly less formal than many others in Máxima’s wardrobe- something fitting not only for this location, but the nature of this trip. It’s a great match for her linen dress, made by Ukrainian designer Vita Kin, although I think I’d prefer the overall ensemble without the tassel earrings.

Not all royal hats are formal ones and I can think of plenty of future events where Queen Máxima will be able to repeat this one. What do you think of this most recent addition to her lineup of blue hats?
