Day 2 of Jordanian State Visit to The Netherlands

The Jordanian state visit to the Netherlands continued today with a program of economic meetings, visits to a technical training school and government luncheon hosted by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. For these events, Queen Máxima repeated her familiar harvest gold velvet ruched turban hat.

“The Brain” or “The Pincushion”, as we have affectionately nicknamed this hat in the past, is a design that illicits strong reactions. Its pairing today with Máxima’s Claes Iversen grey silk flounced dress might be my favourite so far (see other pairings with this hat over at this post) as the hat references the gold trim on the dress’ neckline, belt and cuffs and the pieces work together. Is the pairing enough to make me love the hat? No. That is never going to happen. I do concede, however, this might be almost as good as it gets for this piece- almost as I have some quibbles about Máxima’s sideswept hair.

Jordanian Monarchs Arrive For Dutch State Visit

King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan arrived in The Netherlands yesterday for a two day state visit. While Queen Rania did not wear a hat (she very rarely does!), her host, Queen Máxima predictably did. Her choice was interesting- a repeat of the hat she wore for Prinsjesdag in 2013. While the upswept brim shape of this piece, which is made in gold straw, is a a very familiar shape for Máxima, today was this hat’s first repeat.

Lighting in many of these photos gives the hat a caramel glow but its true colour is as you see in the first photo above- a toasted, golden brown. I’m not overly excited about the styling of this hat with  Máxima’s brown caped coat and lace dress from Claes Iversen- not even the mix of straw, wool and lace textures keeps the ensemble from being a bit bland. I think, however, that’s precisely what the Dutch queen and her stylist were going for in the spirit of being a great host. They might have known Queen Rania was going to show up without a hat (despite longstanding protocol that includes headwear in the dress code for state visits) and this neutral ensemble keeps Máxima from stealing the spotlight.

What do you think about my diplomatic dressing theory? And what do you think of this hat, now that we’ve finally seen it again?

Dutch Queen Opens Women’s Health Center

Queen Máxima was in The Hague today to officially open the Expertise Center for Endometriosis in Balance at HMC Bronovo Hospital. For this opening, she topped her green silk dress with a new hat in grey fur felt. In the shape of an oversize fedora, the design features subtle pinches on the tall crown and a wide, downward facing brim. The hat is simply trimmed with a wide grey Petersham ribbon hatband.

The choice of a new hat in this shade of grey for Máxima is an interesting one, as she has several upswept brim designs in this colour. This shape, however, is slightly less formal – perhaps this makes it more versatile? I can see it being a great hat to pair with a multitude of different outfits for less formal engagements. Formality is my main quibble about this ensemble- I really like the hat and I like the dress but their pairing together is off for me, despite my love of a great royal fedora!. I think it’s the silk- a dressy fabric that feels like it needs a more formal piece of headwear to compliment. We saw Queen Máxima wear this dress with a grey felt upswept brim hat last February, a pairing I think was slightly more successful.

Thursday, March 8: The Duke of Edinburgh in his well worn Panama hat for a carriage drive at Windsor Castle

It has been a very quiet two weeks of royal hats- something that will change next week with a Te Deum mass for the new Swedish princess born this morning and the Cheltenham Festival. In the meantime- any thoughts about these hats?

Dutch Monarchs on Working Trip To China

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima are on a working trip to China. For a meeting wtih Chinese and Dutch entrepreneurs today at the Temple restaurant in Beijing, Queen Máxima repeated her navy smocked silk crepe and georgette organza calot hat trimmed with rows very slim metallic cord.

The hat, matching dress and ombre cape debuted last year for King’s Day and their repeat today seems fitting- the ensemble is striking and special enough for a foreign visit while the small scale of the hat leaves full visibility for Máxima at a restaurant event where turning her head over and over will be inevitable. The orange and navy pattern of the dress and coat makes a strong style statement on its own and the orange gloves, hat and shoes with navy hat and those stunning earrings leaves the emsemble looking polished and complete without being overdone.

Queen Máxima and her stylist don’t always get the balance of accessories right but today, I think they were spot on. Thoughts about this hat’s second appearance today?
