King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima took part in the National Remembrance ceremony held at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam today. Queen Máxima repeated her black felt rounded pillbox hat with flat bow at the back.

Princess Margriet, Pieter van Vollenhoven and Prince Pieter-Christiaan attended a similar ceremony at the Military War Cemetery Grebbeberg near Rhenen.  Princess Margriet repeated her wide brimmed black straw hat trimmed with a simple black hatband and what looks to be large, almost abstract straw leaves on the side. The hat has undergone a renovation since its first outing, when the trim also included black feathers.

Koningsdag 2017 In Tilburg

The Dutch royal family was in Tilburg today to celebrate King Willem Alexander’s 50th birthday.

For Koningsdag festivitied this year, Queen Máxima topped her navy and orange ensemble with a coordinating calot hat. It looks to me that the hat is made of the same smocked silk crepe and georgette organza as Máxima’s navy and orange striped dress- if you look closely, you can see the tiny gathers of smocking.

According to the designer, the dress is embroidered with narrow stripes of metal and crystal embroidery (visible on the stripes of the sleeves below) and I think this embroidery has also been repeated on the hat in between rows of swirled smocking, creating the gold pinstripe edging. These design details- smocking and beaded embroidery- are not ones we see on the average royal hat but coordinate beautifully with this dress and ombre chenille cape. The cape makes quite a style statement on its own and I think it was a good call not only to make the coordinating hat a small one (more of a headpiece) but to leave the orange stripes off of it. In the end, it’s still a lot of look but I think the balance is just right.

Princess Alexia and Princess Arianne also got in on the fun in black and orange mortar board hats.

Koningsdag is always a day of lighthearted celebration. What did you think of  Queen Máxima’s new hat today?

Queen Máxima Opens Community Kitchen

Queen Máxima was in  Lelystad today to officially open the fiftieth Resto VanHarte, a community program where children gather at a school or community center to cook and learn about nutrition.

For this event, Queen Máxima repeated her brown mohair calot hat. This was the hat’s third outing and interestingly, each wearing has been paired with this pink dress (two of the three outings have also included this patterned Natan coat). Máxima often mixes and matches pieces and it’s interesting to see this particular hat worn with the same clothes each time we see it. While not my favourite combination, it makes for a serviceable working ensemble.

Queen Máxima Opens Porcelain Exhibition

Queen Máxima was in Delft this morning to open the exhibition ‘Forbidden Porcelain Exclusive For The Emperor’ at Prinsenhof museum. Amidst a sea of beautiful Ming Dynasty era Chinese porcelain, she chose a dove grey ensemble complete with new hat.

The wide brimmed design, in luxurious velvet felt, follows the familiar shape of an upswept ‘slice’ brim that we’ve seen many times on the Dutch queen and the hat is simply trimmed with a wide Petersham ribbon hatband. The scale and shape are slightly larger and more angular than its hat twins in this same shape, a variation balanced by the soft colour and softened by its pairing with Máxima’s lace dress. I’ve gone back and forth wondering if the lace dress might be better paired with a straw hat… in the end, I think this works.

Day 2 of Argentinian State Visit to The Netherlands

After yesterday’s slight miss with a recycled straw hat, Queen Máxima took a different sartorial approach today for the second day of the Argentinian state visit (think streamlined, sparkling and all new!). Clearly made to match her marvellous Claes Iversen firework embroidered silk coat, the new hat she debuted today is a play on a calot with stacked pleats and a split down the middle.

The coat is the star in this ensemble for good reason. Such signature pieces must be difficult to pair with millinery and here is where I think Fabienne Delvigne excels. The stacked pleats provide some visual interest that compliments (and doesn’t compete with) the coat and the split down the middle lightens the design, making it more of a headpiece than a hat. On its own, you might not like this particular design but its great match for this particular coat bears acknowledgement.

I think there’s going to be some divided opinion on this hat- I can’t wait to hear what you think of it!
