Dutch Monarchs Visit Friesland

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the Dutch province of Northwest Friesland today where they visited an education and employment campus, a tomato farm, a shipyard and a housing and care centre. For this day of engagments, Queen Máxima repeated her buff straw picture hat with gently upswept brim on one side and grosgrain ribbon hatband with flat bow. While the colour on this piece has always felt a little flat to me, Máxima rectified it today by pairing the hat with a bright orange dress.

I really like the colour and texture interplay between Máxima’s orange crepe dress and the neutral buff lace coat and straw hat but I wish she had skipped her orange statement earrings.

It is always fun when Máxima reaches into the depths of her millinery closet to bring out a piece that has not been seen for a while. The colour of this hat makes is among her least memorable- what did you think of its styling with this ensemble today?

Queen Máxima Launches Neighbour’s Day

Queen Máxima was in Urk today to launch the 11th annual Dutch Neighbour’s Day as well as look in at the damage from a recent gas explosion in the town. For this day of engagements,  Máxima repeated her airy turban made of ruched and folded light oyster grey straw. This hat has a slight metallic sheen that makes it sparkle in daylight which in turn, further lightens the design and makes it look all the more like a rain cloud on her head. A pretty rain cloud, certainly, but a rain cloud nonetheless.

Today we saw Queen Elizabeth in a marshmallow and now we’ve seen Queen Máxima in a rain cloud. I can’t resist asking, dearest readers- when it comes to royal millinery, are you with team marshmallow or team rain cloud?

Queen Máxima Opens University

Queen Máxima was in Eindhoven yesterday to officially open the Dutch branch of Singularity University (the institution is explained here). For this, she repeated her the coffee-hued straw slice picture hat that she débuted in Paris in March this year. With her acid green lace suit and neutral brown accessories, the hat topped a relaxed but great looking ensemble.

Since this is Máxima’s third outing of this hat so far this year, we can only guess that it has become one of her favourites. What did you think of its pairint with her lace suit for this event?

Dutch Queen Christens Cruise Ship

HMS Koningsdam, the newest and largest ship in Holland America’s cruise fleet, was officially christened today in Rotterdam by Queen Máxima, who used the occasion to début a new hat.

In navy blue straw (a nice nod to the Dutch company’s corporate colour, seen on their ship’s hulls), the large picture hat featured a rounded crown and wide brim that folded down around the perimeter. Simply trimmed with two intersecting hat bands wrapped around the base of the crown, this hat is all about scale and shape. With Máxima’s navy lace dress and nude accessories, it topped a lovely ensemble.

With this beautiful new design, Queen Máxima now has five pieces on the blue shelf in her millinery closet. I think this addition is a great one for her wardrobe- what do you think?

Dutch Queen Launches Youth Initiative

Queen Máxima was in Utrecht today to kick off a nationwide activity week for young people entitled “Getting Opportunities, Grabbing Opportunities”. For this event, she repeated her oversize burgundy picture hat with straight sided crown and large mushroom-shaped brim. The the colour and scale of this hat will always make Máxima stand out (which makes me love the hat) but I was less enthused about the styling of the overall ensemble.

I’m not sure that orange accessories work for this ensemble… even when worn by the Queen of the House of Orange! Most of us adore Queen Máxima’s ‘more is more’ approach to fashion but sometimes, I wonder if ‘less might be a little more’ in the end. Thoughts?
