Belated Birthday of Queen Máxima

Royal Hats Last Wednesday, Queen Máxima celebrated her 44th birthday.  I want to send our belated best wishes to the Dutch queen today with suggestions of hats we would most like to see her repeat in the coming year. My pick is a hat we have not seen for a long while-  this large brimmed picture hat in bright magenta straw wrapped in feathers. I think Queen Máxima is at her millinery best in large hats in bold colours and I would love to see this Fabienne Delvigne design make another outing. What hat would you like to see her repeat this year?

Queen Máxima Opens Education Centre

On Friday, Queen Máxima was in Zoetermeer to officially open the new Koninklijke Kentalis care education centre for people with disabilities. For this event, she repeated a headpiece of beige folded straw. The piece, which has a very organic and natural feel to it, has a lovely delicacy and sense of movement to it.  I admire that Queen Máxima consistently wears hats for official openings and and while I’m not usually a fan of all beige outfits or hats worn with trousers (and I don’t like choice of blouse with her jacket), I think there is something that works about they way she has dressed down this hat for this informal event.

Dutch and Belgian Queens Open Sculpture Exhibition

On Wednesday, an outdoor sculpture exhibition celebrating 20 years of Dutch-Belgian cultural cooperation was officially opened in The Hague by Queen Máxima and Queen Mathilde. It’s not often that we see two Queens at work together and it seems that these two decided to mark this special engagement with a pair of coordinating NATAN frocks and two new and very vibrant hats.

Queen Máxima topped her coral coat dress with a large straw saucer hat in the same hue. The hat was cheekily trimmed with a mass of vertically placed rainbow feathers in the center and a wide band of tan straw edged around the brim.

The shape of this saucer is a departure for Máxima and it balanced very well with her collarless coat and chic chignon. I suspect that most of us would go to great lengths to avoid wearing an orange saucer hat trimmed with feathers that look to be plucked straight from an Obsk but on Máxima, it just works. In fact, I think her coral coat dress works better with the hat than it would without it.

Queen Mathilde topped her orange and royal blue printed dress with a ruched blue straw calot hat. The draping on this particular piece is beautifully done (amazing how the straw looks to have the same fluidity as fabric) and this shade of blue works well for Mathilde.. It is a shape we have seen on both queens numerous times and while I would love to see some more variety, this piece is so well done that it warrants a thumbs up.

Earlier in the day, Queen Mathilde attended a reception for Belgian artists held at the the residence of the Belgian ambassador.

For this meeting, she paired the same hat with a blue and white printed Dries van Noten dress. This quick change shows the versatility of this hat and makes me wonder, dear readers, which dress do you prefer with it?

From all accounts, it seems that a wonderful day was had by Queen Máxima and Queen Mathilde in The Hague. What did you think of their vibrant hats?

Dutch Monarchs Open New Tunnel

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands spent a busy day in the region of Zeeuws Vlaanderen today with visits to Terneuzen, Hulst, and Sluis before officially opening the Sluiskiltunnel. For this event, Queen Máxima wore a new picture hat in pale pink straw.

Trimmed simply with a wide ribbon and bow around the base of the crown, this hat was all about scale- scale gained from a large brim that gently curved upward on one side. It’s a lovely hat that unfortunately, did not wow as Máxima’s hats usually do. And why not? Colour issues. The peachy pink hue of this hat is so close to Maxima’s skin tone that the two begin to oddly blend together. While this could be balanced the right outfit, the clash between the pink hat and the golden yellow skirt and tunic (which, to be honest,is a disaster on its own) does nothing to help. Pink and yellow can be a beautifully fresh combination when done right but this is so very, very not right.

It is not often that a royal picture hat doesn’t work for me but I’m afraid, this one is one of the few. Queen Maxima has a similar hat with a smaller brim in a slightly different shade of pink that I think is a better hat for her. What do you think?
