Queen Máxima Supports Foundation For Forgotten Children

Queen Máxima supported the work of The Forgotten Child Foundation in Goirle yesterday, attending the foundation’s presentation of an award for extraordinary commitment to forgotten children. For this event, she repeated her pleated red fabric calot hat. On this hat’s last outing, Máxima wore it off to the side, balanced by a low chignon; on this outing, she followed the traditional placement of a calot hat, centered on the crown of her head.  These photos allow us to see the graceful pleats that surround this hat, giving it a sense of movement and interest despite the very simple shape. Paired with her red coat, Máxima cast a rather vibrant picture. I’m curious- what do you think of the new way Queen Máxima wore this hat?

European Royals Commemorate 70th Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation

Members of six royal houses gathered at the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Oswiecim, Poland today to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its liberation. Gathered together to remember the horrific history of this place, where more than one and a half million people lost their lives, were the King and Queen of Belgium, the King and Queen of the Netherlands, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and the Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg.

For the outdoor commemoration ceremony, Queen Mathilde wore a large black faux fur hat.

Crown Princess Victoria and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stèphanie did not wear hats for this event. This commemoration, however, was not about hats or who attended. It was about taking time to remember a period of purest evil so that through this memory, humanity can keep it from becoming part of our future.

Queen Máxima! While some of Queen Máxima’s hats topped your list of least favourites last year, the overall contents of her millinery closet remain so popular with royal hat watchers that she easily won this category. Several of you commented about her fearless, risk-taking approach to millinery (which accounts for her hats topping our favourite and least favourite lists) and noted how exciting it is for us spectators to see what she will wear next. I’m sure that you all join me in eagerly looking forward to what hat surprises Máxima has in store for us this year!

One of these lovely royal ladies celebrated a milestone birthday today- check back tomorrow afternoon for a look back at some of her many fantastic hats.

All hats above worn by Queen Máxima were designed by Fabienne Delvigne. Please click on each photo to link back to the original post with additional information on each piece.

It appears, dear readers, that Philip Treacy’s 2013 predicted death of the fascinator was indeed, correct. These five winning hats create an elegant lineup of classic shapes with a little fantasy thrown in for good measure. I think that makes a foolproof formula for marvelous royal millinery. Congratulations to Belgian milliner Fabienne Delvigne who, for the second consecutive year, designed your favourite royal hat of the year. To all the top royal milliners who created these beautiful hats- Fabienne Delvigne, Philip Treacy and Jane Taylor – we salute you!
