Last Sunday, the Swedish royal family donned warm winter hats to unveil the statue of King Carl XIV Johan (the first Bernadotte King of Sweden) in its new location on the Slottsbacken “Castle Slope” in Stockholm

Princess Rym Ali of Jordan in a fetching deep aubergine felt cloche on Tuesday with her children at a tree lighting ceremony.

Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria wore brimmed hats last Sunday to the funeral of Count Oscar Bernadotte; Princess Sofia wore a black hair bow and snood. You can see the hat and headpiece worn by Dagmar Von Arbin (née Countess Bernadotte of Wisborg) and Countess Marianne Bernadotte here. 
Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Laurence were in Chile last weekend to take part in a number of events to mark the Bicentenary of the Chilean Navy.
A preview of the Swedish royal annual documentary shows the Crown Princess and her family enjoying summer in several casual hats.
On Wednesday, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended the 50th anniversary ceremony of the Sharoushi Act in Tokyo. The Empress repeated a small grey rimmed saucer hat with layered silk bow.

Princess Masako celebrated her 55th birthday today with a visit to the Imperial Royal Palace. She wore a repeated robin’s egg blue rounded pillbox for the visit.

And from Irish millinery brand Angels and Insects, this red velvet blocked percher trimmed with luxuriously beautiful scarlet velvet and silk dahlia blooms and green leather leaves. LOVE.

Swedish Royals Welcome Italian State Visit

The Swedish King and Queen welcomed Italian President Sergio Mattarella and his daughter Laura yesterday for the start of a state visit. For the official welcome at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Queen Silvia wore a new hat.

With a blocked peacock blue felt wave-shaped base, the hat is trimmed with a grey diamond woven veil and a ruffled flower made of grey felt and grey and blue silk. The gentle curves of the base frame Silvia’s head so beautifully and the combination of trim adds another layer of softness. I particularly love the pop of blue to contrast against her exquisite silver grey suit- it’s a good look for her.

Previously Worn: This hat is new
Crown Princess Victoria wore another one of her go-to headpieces, this one in pale blue. While a good look of this headpiece evades me, we can see it has a straw twist, some feathers and some ruffled silk flowers. Unlike anything else she’s worn before, I suspect this headpiece was specifically chosen to pair with Victoria’s beautiful lace dress.

Laura Mattarella’s burgundy felt pillbox with interesting wired bow at the bottom also deserves some attention here- the use of felt to contrast with her velvet dress is really good, as is that wired bow, which gives a fresh and unexpected twist to the classic shape. It’s really good on her.

I can’t imagine the choice of blue on all the royal ladies was coincidental- together, they make a well coordinated group. What do you think of these three new blue millinery designs yesterday in Stockholm?

Opening of Swedish Parliament 2018

The Swedish royal family attended the opening of Swedish Parliament Riksdagen yesterday in Stockholm, dressed, as they are each year, in black and white.

Queen Silvia used the occasion to debut a new hat. The teardrop shaped calot is covered in textured white silk crepe with seam lines finished in fine, double stitching, and trimmed with a pair of curling, trimmed black feathers and a black velvet flower. The graphic trim works well on the hat, given a modern and graphic element to the traditional shape. Queen Silvia carries these modified calot shapes so well and the scheme of this one gives it a more contemporary feel than some of her other hats in this shape.

While a clear shot of Crown Princess Victoria’s black and white headpiece eludes me (click on the twitter link below to open a gallery with better views), she wore the same striped bow she wore to this event in 2014.

Princess Sofia repeated her black velvet bandeau with knotted bow. It’s a fine enough headpiece but I wish both Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Sofia would fill their hat closets with a selection of small, embellished black designs (take a peek at the Countess of Wessex’s black perchers for inspiration, ladies!) to pull from for this event in coming years.

Last  Monday, Queen Silvia donned local Lovö dress, including a lace trimmed cap, to host the 20th annual “Pensioners Day” at Drottningholm Palace

The Danish monarchy shared several wonderful personal photos taken during the Crown Princely family’s recent trip to the Faroe Islands including this shot, taken by Crown Princess Mary, which shows the beautiful embroidery on Princess Isabella and Princess Josephine’s bonnets.

 Royal Hats

Countess Camilla of Rosenborg married Ivan Ottesen in Lyngby last Sunday. Countess Camilla, who has four children from her first marriage, is the daughter of the late Count Christian of Rosenborg (he was a first cousin of Queen Margrethe). The marriage took place at Lyngby Church, the burial place of Camilla’s parents.

In other wedding themed news… the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding attire will go on display at Windsor Castle and Holyrood Palace this fall and it’s great to already see, via photos, greater detail of the tiara, dress and veil.

New portraits of Prince Nicolai released by the Danish monarchy on the occasion of his 19th birthday and the most adorable snaps of Prince Gabriel shared by the Swedish monarchy for his first birthday

Also off the cuteness scale were Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella yesterday in Monagasque traditional dress yesterday at Monaco’s annual picnic

Queen Sonja’s childhood home has been relocated, restored and opened as a museum earlier this week. She and King Harald used the opening as an opportunity to recreate one of their engagement photos, just in time for their 50th wedding anniversary
