Dutch Royals Visit Brunei- Day 2

For Day 2 of their visit to Brunei, the Dutch Royals did not seem to get the same memo about the itinerary for the day. Queen Beatrix was all business in a dark floral print dress and large black straw hat (with interesting patent leather band around the brim).

I think I would have liked this look… had it not been so harshly contrasted against Princess Máxima’s informal “I’m in the Tropics on a Mini Holiday!” cheeky straw hat worn with a vacation lounge wear- a Big Bird yellow tunic and cropped pants. You’ve got to wonder what happened to their dresser’s communication on this one.

I suppose that all’s well that ends well, and end well it did. The royal ladies both changed for a reception later in the day-  Beatrix into a flattering pale lavender flat-top with bumper brim and Máxima into another wide brimmed natural straw hat.

What do you think about the hats we’ve seen on this royal tour?

  1. I wish Maxima would look in a mirror and see how really silly she looks in some of the outfits she wears. Maxima strikes me as a person that feels she needs to be the center of attention and she does this through her clothes. I have tried so hard to like her yet I just cannot seem to do it. She is so over the top and looks so ridiculous at times. She does really well on tiara events… her day outfits are just to much at times. I am dreading the day the Queen steps down and Maxima becomes Queen. It is no telling what kind of things she will wear then.

    • I sometimes wonder if Maxima’s style is reflects her Argentinian roots (and thus, is a little more bold and flamboyant than some of us are used to). She certainly is not afraid of being over the top!

        • I think both Mary and Mette Marit have had their fair share of criticism about fashion and hat choices! Recently, Mette Marit was raked over the coals for not wearing a true hat to the Luxmbourg Royal Wedding (she wore a headband). I agree, Maxima is much bolder than the other current crown princesses. For some reason, the women in the Dutch Royal Family are much more bold in their fashion and hats than other royals. Look at Princess Laurentien and Princess Mabel! When compared to he sister-in-laws (rather than the other crown princesses), Maxima’s choices do not stand out so much.

In the end, all hats are rather frivolous and Maxima’s hat choices certainly give us non-royals lots to talk about!

    • I agree. Maxima is on tour with the QUEEN. The Queen should be standing out, not Maxima. Then again, this might just be her personality. She seems very outgoing and kind of loud. Like the kind of person who is always laughing loudest at a party. Her clothes are like that, too.

      • I have always thought she must be loud. When you see pictures of her when she is laughing you can tell she is just hee hawing. I have never thought there is anything lady like about her.
