Japanese Royals Attend Tree Planting Festival

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan attended the annual national tree planting festival at Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park in Nanbu, Tottori yesterday. The Empress wore another one of her signature flat plate hats, this one in white with a slate blue bow at the front to match her suit.

  1. I’m not a very big fan of these hats but I can’t really imagine anything different for the Empress either.

    • I think her pillbox hats are more successful, although she tends to wear them very small and at the front of her head. Wouldn’t she look lovely in a larger pillbox worn at the back of her head?

    • This hat is flat as a pancake. The bow is nice but I don’t think flat hat looks nice at all. She shood try a pillbox hat. They are always very elegant and would look better.

    • In Japan, large hats would not fit with the culture and would be seen as trying to be American. This would not be acceptable for the royal family members.

      • This quiet restraint shown in the fashion of the Japanese royals would be most welcome for some of the European royals. The hats and clothese some of them wear these days are loud, jarring, inappropriate and unattractive. Being royal is not about wearing something to be noticed. It is about being elegant.

    • The Empress wears simple hats compared to most of the other queens and princesses. Hers usually are more elegant than everyone else. You do not need feathhers and froufrou to be elegant.
