Princess Beatrix Celebrates Limburg

Princess Beatrix attended the 150th anniversary celebrations of the  and Antiquarian Society in Maastricht on Friday where she was presented with the newly published, Limburg: Een Geschiedenis (Limburg: A History). For this event, Beatrix wore a caramel straw hat in her signature “one-tiered hat cake” shape with a stacked crown  and straw loops on the side. I’m thinking that she truly does own this hat in every single colour of the rainbow…

Queen Máxima Supports Entrepreneurship Initiative in Amsterdam

Queen Máxima of the Netherlandso attended the kick-off of a mentoring program for entrepreneurs in Amsterdam.  She wore the same taupe ruched straw hat she wore back in May to visit a children’s hospital in Rotterdam. It is a great hat on her although I liked it better paired with the red suit she wore it with last time. I think her tailored and clean-lined Natan suit today would have worked better with a brimmed, classic picture hat.

There has been much debate in the comments of this blog about this shape of hat- is it a turban? Is it a pillbox? I think it’s both, which leads me to propose a solution to this debate. Why don’t we call this new genre of hat,  which is two parts pillbox and one part turban, a Pillban? What do you think (of both the hat and the proposed name)?

Update- no need to invent a new hat genre! This hat is actually a toque.

Queen Bids Farewell to Scot Regiment

Queen Elizabeth visited Howe Barracks in Canterbury, Kent today to bid farewell to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders who, due to defense cuts, leaving the city they called home for the last then years. The Queen wore a lovely lilac picture hat with stacked crown and side pink roses. This is a classic hat designed by Rachel Trevor Morgan and I think the style, proportion and detailing looks wonderful on the Queen. We have seen this hat a few times (in March 2012 and at Ascot in 2010) and I hope we see it a few more!

Queen Recognizes Grenadier Guards

Yesterday, Queen Elizabeth praised the efforts of Britain’s most prestigious infantry regiment, the Grenadier Guards, as she presented their colleagues with new colours. The Queen, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the regiment, looked bright and lovely in the same turquoise Rachel Trevor Morgan designed hat she wore for last month for her visit to the BBC.  My thoughts on this hat are not changed- it’s a great hat on Her Majesty and made her stand out well in a sea of red tunics.

Duchess of Gloucester Visits the East End

Last Thursday, June 20, the Duchess of Gloucester attended The East End Community Coronation Gala and opened the Francis Lee Community Centre at Clare House, Old Ford, London.

For these engagements, she wore a soft pink straw hat with rolled brim. The classic shape of this hat looks great on the Duchess…  but not with a lime green and turquoise blue flowered dress (the addition of a lime green scarf around the crown of this hat does not really help). I can’t for the life of me understand how Brigitte thought pairing this hat with this dress was a good idea, especially since she has both a lime green hat and a blue hat that would have matched so much, much better.
