Dutch King and Queen Spend 2nd Day on Curacao

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima continued their Caribbean tour today with a second day on the island of Curacao.

Máxima debuted her second new hat of this tour- a whimsical fuchsia pink straw beret trimmed in a mass of pink striped grosgrain ribbon. This hat was a stark contrast from the all-white hat she wore yesterday and provided a bright and very fun exclamation point to her pink yellow and black Ikat print dress.

I think this hat is great fun and looks fantastic on Máxima.  I would have preferred her shoes and handbag in different colours (the all pink accessories are a little too matchy-matchy for me) but this didn’t diminish how much I adore this hat. I can’t wait to hear your opinions on this one!

Monaco Royals Celebrate National Day

The Monegasque Royal Family celebrated Monaco’s national holiday today with a traditional mass in the Cathedral of Monaco and balcony appearance at the palace.

Princess Charlene wore a new navy wool picture hat with wide brim. It was nice… but I thought it fell a little flat. I think some sort of large feather sweeping across the hat would have added the “little something” her outfit needed and lifted the austerity of the overall look.

Princess Caroline wore a large black Garbo-style picture hat with slightly floppy brim. While this hat was also quite simple in design, the height of the crown, the shape of the brim and the ribbon around the crown created more visual interest than Charlene’s hat did. Granted, an impeccably tailored Chanel suit will make any hat look amazing!

Princess Stephanie didn’t wear a hat… again. It seems her allergy to head wear is a chronic condition. She did, however, slick her hair back in a severe ponytail which was anchored by a scrunchie. To her credit, the scrunchie matched her coat… but it was a SCRUNCHIE and such things should simply not be seen in public on royal heads.

Charlotte Casiraghi did not attend this event (rumours are that her baby is due soon) and Princess Alexandra does not appear to have quite reached hat wearing age. Hopefully, we will see these two younger members of the family in fantastic hats at this event next year.UPDATE: video of this event caught a glimpse of Tatiana Santo Domingo. She looks to be wearing a simple black cloche hat trimmed with a wide ribbon.

Yesterday, this family unveiled a statue of their father, Prince Rainier, in the palace gardens. For this more somber event, Princess Caroline wore a small black cloche hat.

Dutch King and Queen visit Curacao

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima continued their Caribbean tour today with a visit to Curacao. Máxima reached back in her millinery closet and pulled out a hat we have not seen in a very long time- a white straw picture hat with a sharply upturned front brim trimmed with an explosion of white feathers. This hat has a slightly 80’s vibe (see here and here) but I adore it nonetheless and am so excited to see it again! The shape is a little less formal than most picture hats and the feather poof is pure frivolity and fun.  Last time Máxima wore this hat, there were green feathers tucked in with the white ones; I suppose the removal of these green feathers now makes this hat more versatile. If I were to nitpick, I would push this hat a little further up/back on Máxima’s head (so the front sight line was not perched directly on her eyebrows) but that is a picky detail and does not diminish my love for this hat.  What do you think of this picture hat?

Belgian Royal Family Celebrate King’s Day

The Belgian Royals celebrated King’s Day yesterday with the traditional Te Deum mass. It was the first time we have seen King Albert and Queen Paola at this event (the reigning King and Queen do not attend King’s Day observance). Paola repeated her floppy chocolate velvet beret. I find this hat a little too informal for her although it does look quite nice with her coat. The real news of the day was when Paola took off her hat to unveil a chic new haircut.

Princess Claire was also in a chocolate hued hat, this one in wool felt with a large upturned brim. With her brown herringbone hat and velvet clutch, I thought her outfit was very elegant.

Princess Astrid wore my favourite hat of the day, this red square-crowned Bowler with brim that slanted downward on one side and upward on the other. It was a bold hat but styled with her camel coat, I thought she looked fantastic.

While I missed seeing Queen Mathilde at this event (something we’ll have to get used to now that she is queen), it was wonderful to see the rest of the family today in this lineup of rather smart hats.Which one did you like best?

Dutch Royals in Bonaire

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima continued their Caribbean tour with a visit to Bonaire today. For the first time so far this trip, Máxima unveiled a new hat! It appears to be a cream fabric pillbox with large stacked bow on one side. I like the colour and scale of this hat, especially paired with this new sorbet-striped summer dress, although the bow on the side seems oddly out of proportion. I realize it’s a little dangerous to wish for a more dramatic bow from  Máxima (see here) but this bow looks like a bunched up wet washcloth stuck to a perfectly nice little pillbox.

UPDATE: This was actually a convertible hat! The designer is also confirmed as Fabienne Delvigne.
