Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko met Indian President Pranab Mukherjee at a ceremony welcoming them to India yesterday. The Empress wore a new hat- a large (much larger than usual!) white saucer hat trimmed with a large green leaf and pink flower petals. I was very pleased to see her in something with such a large brim.
Later in the day, the Imperial couple visited Jawaharlal Nehru University. This hat also appears to be a new one, although exactly the same shape of saucer (with slightly upturned rim at the back) as these two grey saucer hats. This hat was trimmed with a fabric flower in the same charcoal grey fabric as Michiko’s tailored suit.

I LOVE the larger hat on Empress Michiko! She looks so lovely, and I love her suit and jewelry as well as her hat. The gray hat and outfit is nice as well, but I much prefer the white color on the Empress.
This is such a great hat on her, she looks so elegant and chic….I love the hat, so pretty and ladylike. The entire outfit looks great, she has such dignity and grace about her…..
I too am glad to see the Empress in a hat with a larger brim. I am wondering why she always wears her hat so far down on her forehead. A cultural thing, perhaps?
my assumption is that – like many japanese women – she is of small height and apparently has a fragile stature. so any headgear too big might look silly on her and overwhelm her overall appearance. plus: doesn’t most of us ladies fancy one (or a small number of) favourite look(s) that we tend to repeat because we feel comfortable wearing them, be it wardrobe or accessories? as for me, i confess … i do!
although her style is predictable, i like her being covered on this blog.
Her hats are boring. You should skip them.
My intent is to give all royals equal coverage here. That is not going to change.
I love that you cover all the royals and I actually like her hats this time. Especially the one that is larger. They are such a darling couple. Grace and dignity personified. She always looks impeccable. Good job!
I like that you cover them!
Thanks for covering all of the royals. I don’t always like the hat they have chosen to wear, but I still love to see them! Keep up the good work HatQueen.
