European Royals Attend Papal Inauguration

The Inauguration Mass for Pope Francis was held in St Peter’s Square in Rome today. A number of European royals attended this event, which marks the beginning of the papacy. The standard royal dress code for visits to the Vatican is black with a head veil, however, five Catholic sovereigns currently hold Privilège du Blanc. Queen Paola of Belgium and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg chose to wear white today; Queen Paola’s Belgian lace veil was just exquisite.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester also attended as representatives of Queen Elizabeth and the British Government. Brigitte wore what looks to be a black pillbox (or bumper) with veil.

An array of beautiful veils here, don’t you think? To those of you more knowledgeable about fashion- can someone explain why some of the royals wore full length dresses (Maria Theresa and Máxima) while most wore knee-length?

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Visit the Irish Guards

Prince William and The Duchess of Cambridge were in Aldershot today to attend The Irish Guards St Patricks Day Parade at Mons Barracks. Kate presented the traditional sprigs of shamrock to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day today.  She wore the same black wool beret with felt flower and leaf on the side designed by Sylvia Fletcher of Lock & Co. that she wore on March 8, 2012 at the start of the Queen’s Jubilee Tour.

This time she wore her hair up- I think I liked it better down (as she wore it last time) with this hat. What do you think?

Queen Margrethe of Denmark wore the same wool hat with fur brim she wore to visit the Royal Life Guards earlier this month, but replaced the red button detail with an ivory one.

Sofia Hellqvist, longtime girlfriend of Prince Carl Philip, also attended. While not officially a Swedish Royal, her attendance at this event seems to indicate she has become a member of this family. She wore an unembellished black bumper hat.

Zara Phillips at Last Day of Cheltenham

It took a while, but I finally found a photo of Zara Phillips at the final day of the Cheltenham Festival today. She wore a Jane Taylor designed black wool structured percher with jewelled feather detail on the side. I think this hat is a winner… unlike her husband’s horse which sadly, didn’t finish the race.
