Cambridges at St. Patrick’s Parade

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the St. Patrick’s Day parade at Mons Barracks today in Aldershot. For this visit to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards to present the traditional sprigs of Shamrocks to the Officers and Guardsmen of the Regiment, Kate was predictably dressed in green. She repeated the bow-trimmed hard shell beret hat we saw her debut at Christmas. While I like this hat and the tailored green coat she wore, I wasn’t a fan of the two pieces together. I think without the green belt and shoes, it might have worked a little better. That being said, today was indeed a day for head to toe green and Kate certainly delivered. What do you think of her St. Patrick’s themed ensemble?

  1. Oh dear, what a mishmash of greens. Not a good look if you are Catherine, fine if you are Kermit! Good grief, it’s so green it’s reflecting off her mismatched black belt giving it a green sheen as well!

  2. MrFitzroy suggests it’s time to start knocking heads and taking names amongst others in the Royal Fashion Press (Our own dear HatQueen ne’er puts a foot wrong).
The Daily Beast notes The Duchess’ outfit included a “Fascinator” by Gina Foster, (though their stated source, Marie Claire, does refer to it properly as a HAT!) One doesn’t want to become the millinery police….but please, if they are trying to be arbiters, they need to know what they are writing about !!!

    • Thanks for the compliment. I am certainly not immune from errors… although I do admit gritting my teeth at how terribly misused the term “facinator” is.

  3. Loved the ensemble when I saw the pics yesterday, and the color variation didn’t bother me at all. Any excuse to wear sassy green shoes, I say!

And anyway, most attention will be distracted from the colors of the ensemble to the honking great corsage of shamrocks. 🙂

  4. Love this hat! Not sure about the different greens tho. I’ve seen some pics where they complement and others not so much.

  5. Love all the pieces but I would have not worn them together. The chocolate brown and green from 2011 is much more successful. How about navy with the green next year?

  6. I do like the hat, it’s handsome. But the greens don’t match! Cardinal sin in creating an outfit as far as I’m concerned – looks like a failed colour match and not an intentional difference.

    • Agree entirely. Coat and accessories have blue undertones, hat is more a kelly green. Her black hat from last year would have been a better choice.

  7. I can’t get my mind off of the fact that coat and beret don’t match: both dark green, but not the same shade, and it ruins the effect

    • I’m with you. The shoes and coat match well enough, but the hat – though I love it – is definitely a different shade. It may have appeared to be a match in indoor light. The overall effect may have been more successful if she had gone with a contrasting color for her accessories.

  8. It looks as though the color’s a little off between the hat and the coat, although in the second picture it looks fine. I appreciate Kate’s green shoes, belt and clutch. Queen Elizabeth has the world market for black accessories covered; others don’t need to follow suit. I hive high hopes for the Australia-New Zealand trip.
I like this coat. I like this hat. If they really go together (and I’m sure they do in some lights; otherwise it wouldn’t have been chosen), I like the combination.

  9. My God, is she auditioning for Wicked?! Waaaaaaay too much green! If you’re going to go all for one colour, mix the shades up more. This looks like she thought they matched. They don’t. And then shoes and belt same colour. Blimey, a lot of green. Also, it’s pretty warm in the UK right now (I was In shorts yesterday, which is enough of a fashion crime in itself, but enough about me!) she must have boiled in this coat! Sorry Kate, I like the pieces, but through in something else next time.
