Imperial Couple Travel Home

On Friday, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko returned to Tokyo from Ujiyamada Station in Ise City after several days spent in Mie Prefecture. For this train journey, the Empress wore a hat we have not seen before, and in pink, no less! This hat, a medium sized saucer, featured a pink hound’s tooth bow in the same fabric as Michiko’s jacket and a spray of pink flowers. It is one of the more vibrant hats we have seen on The Empress and I thought it was marvelous to see her in some colour. I also thought the interesting diagonal pink collar on her jacket coordinated well with her hat and made the whole outfit come alive. Empress Michiko looked great, don’t you think?

  1. Hummm, it is great to see the Empress in *color* and this color looks so nice on her, the hat or whatever it is, way to busy, there is a pattern, the 2 different solid colors, then the bow/flower(whatever) and then all those different shapes on top of it…………….this makes a mess. Too much going on here, I don’t like saucers on the forehead, yet if it had been less busy, it might have said okay with the suit. I love the suit, very chic on her.

  2. We westerners react to color, I guess. Excellent! Hat obviously was put together with great attention to detail.

  3. finally colour! still not always being a fan of those little UFO dishes having landed on her forehead, i’ll give her a pass this time because she looks sooo lovely in pastels. i’m not familiar with the japanese court’s dress code, but if it allows more colour, i wished the empress embraced at least more pastels instead of the neutral non-colours white / beige / grey she keeps sporting so many times.
