Chinese President Arrives in Belgium

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde greeted Chinese President Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan, who arrived in Belgium this morning to begin a state visit.  At first glance, I thought Queen Mathilde, who looked striking in royal blue,  was wearing the same calot hat she wore for her recent visit to Luxembourg. Alas, the hat she wore today is different. Looking closely at this ensemble, I fell in love with Mathilde’s dress but thought her hat fell flat. The calot shape was a perfect pair for the structured dress but the seam down the middle of the hat and the single feather made the hat lack both polish and punch in my estimation. And when a royal hat lacks both of these things, what’s the point of it being there? Royal blue is a marvelous colour for Mathilde while she looked great overall (those shoes are killer!), I think she would have looked just as great without this hat. Maybe even better. But enough about my ranting- what do you think about Mathilde’s outfit and hat today?

  1. I’m not sure if it is a seam so much as an additional fold or two in the hat–the best view of this is the bottom photo–with the feath coming out of one of the two folds. I think the folds on the hat are meant to pick up on the overlapping folds in the skirt of Mathilde’s dress. Quite a lovely detail really. I quite like it

  2. Queen Mathilde looks wonderful, very much a fabulous lady…the entire outfit together is perfect, even the hat! I really like the color on her, she is so very much what a queen should be.

  3. If that dress is Natan I will eat my shorts because it’s GORGEOUS. The panels in the skirt are so chic and beautiful. But I agree the hat is a little meh.

  4. Somehow this hat would be more suited as part of a school uniform. Maybe its the seam. Maybe its the feather. Maybe the two are working against each other.
