Princess Beatrix Visits the Caribbean

Princess Beatrix is visiting the island of Saint Maarten this week. Yesterday, she opened the UK Youth Parliament; for this event, she repeated a royal blue picture hat with square crown, upturned brim and knotted band around the crown. While I would prefer a less angular crown shape for Princess Beatrix, the colour and brim shape of this hat is really pretty on her.

Queen Elizabeth In Portsmouth

Queen Elizabeth traveled to Portsmouth Naval Base for a visit to HMS Lancaster today. She looked particularly summery in a light turquoise dress and coat topped off with a white straw hat. This hat was trimmed in the same turquoise fabric as her coat and a silk spray of lily of the valley blossoms; the crown also featured a unique hourglass shape. The form is interesting, although I think it requires a crown that is a little too tall for Her Majesty. What do you think of this summery straw hat?

Wessexes At Church of Scotland General Assembly

The Earl and Countess of Wessex have taken part in the 2014 General Assembly Meetings of The Church of Scotland this week. For these two events, Sophie has debuted new and very lovely hats. The first, worn on May 17, is a newly renovated oyster mushroom brimmed picture hat  with flat, shallow crown. This hat was originally trimmed with a large, flying cream bow  which has been removed and replaced with wispy, curling black feathers, ecru feathers and ecru crin twists.  The new trim slightly overwhelms the hat and I think I preferred its previous version.

The second is this beret style cocktail that the designer described as “a bespoke beaded lace beret with feather wing detail & handmade silk rose.” This hat is more delicate and decidedly feminine. It’s another great shape for Sophie (maybe a better shape?) although I would love to see her in some more saturated colour.

These two hats showcase Sophie’s dual millinery styles (edgy and a little daring on one side, soft and lovely on the other). Which one of these hats do you prefer?

Scandinavian Royals in Norway

The Swedish and Danish monarchs traveled to Norway last weekend to take part in the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution. One of the weekend’s events was unveiling a statue of King Christian Frederik (an interesting fellow who was King of both Norway and Denmark). Queen Margrethe of Denmark did the honors in her pale blue suit and matching brimless hat with pork pie style crown, horizontally pleated sides and flower pinwheel on the side.

Queen Sonja repeated a cream picture hat with side flower (not visible here) and pink feathers. Sonja often chooses small hats and I love to see her in a larger picture hat such as this one.

Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall in Canada

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall arrived in Canada yesterday for a whirlwind four-day visit. Today, they attended a welcome ceremony in Halifax where Camilla unveiled a new hat- this cornflower blue hard-shell beret trimmed with an oversize pheasant feather. My first thought was that in this hat, she looks ready to set off with a ghillie for a Balmoral hunt but at second look, I think this whole ensemble is playing subtle homage to today’s host city, which is in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia (New Scotland). It is nice to see the Duchess experimenting with different hat shapes but this one is all about that FEATHER… I can’t decide if Camilla is wearing this hat or the hat is wearing her. What do you think?
