Seeing Quintuple: Queen Máxima

Queen Máxima has certainly embraced the modified toque hat as one of her go-to hat styles. When she debuted a new red toque last week for Prinsjesdag, I had a sense of deja vu and I suspect some of you did as well:

To be fair, the red gown and toque worn last week are a different shade of red than Máxima’s red suit (and required a matching hat). However, does it seem strange to you that Máxima has two red toques to go with her red suit? Click on each of the photographs above to take you to the original post covering these events (and confirmation that the first two toques are indeed, not the same toque!). All three hats were designed by Belgian Milliner, Fabienne Delvigne.

UPDATES: Máxima’s penchant for toque hats has continued with fourth and fifth red beauties added October 1, 2014 (below left) and March 20, 2015 (below right). While the fifth had could arguably be considered a turban, Queen Máxima wears it in the same way she wears her other toque hats- off her face, centered on the crown of her head like a calot hat.  I think these two additions are due to colour and fabric matches- they both look to be custom made specifically to coordinate with certain dresses – and I am most amused to see two more come into circulation!

Royal Couple Attend Service at Westminster Abbey

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall attended a service of thanksgiving and rededication for the the Battle of Britain Fighter Association this morning at Westminster Abbey. Camilla repeated her ice blue picture hat with inverted edging, straw and crin bands around the crown, and mass of straw and crin curled bow loops on the side. I adore this hat- the scale and colour is beautiful on Camilla and the light feel of the hat, amid ALL that trim, is remarkable. The Duchess can carry a large hat like few others and I thought she looked marvelous in this hat. Your thoughts, dear readers?

Danish Queen Tours Colourful Museum Exhibit

Last weekend, Queen Margrethe of Denmark toured the exhibition ‘Transformations – Classical Sculpture in Colour’ at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek museum in Copenhagen.  For this visit, Margrethe wore a grey straw hat we have not seen in a long time- so long that this is its first appearance here on Royal Hats! With a rounded grey straw crown and very lightly woven grey straw brim, this hat was trimmed with a large melon coloured feather and band around the crown in the same print as Margrethe’s coordinating blouse (see a better view of this hat here). I love the lightness of the transparent straw brim, the shape and the scale of this hat on Margrethe, and how the pale grey contrasts with those unexpected hits of orange. I’m just not sure about that oddly placed feather trim. What do you think?

Hat Types: the Casque

 Casque | Royal Hats

After receiving a number inquires about Crown Princess Mary’s hat yesterday, I thought it was time for a closer look at the rarely seen casque hat.

History: During the 15th and 16th centuries, royal and noble men donned ornately decorated helmets (usually without a visor) called “casques” for protection in battle. When the calot hat came into fashion for women in the 1920s, a variation of this style spun off- calot hats were closely fitting caps perched on the back of the wearer’s head but this new variation wrapped around the head to frame the wearer’s face. As the style resembles a sort of feminine helmet, it became known as the casque. Casques resurged in popularity during the 1950s.

Characteristics: A close fitting cap or helmet that extends from the back of the head to frame the  wearer’s face. Often trimmed with feathers or leaves, casques have no visor or brim.

Royals Associated with this Hat Style: Princesses in the 1950s. We seldom see this hat shape on royals today.

I am afraid that the casque hat is not on my list of favourite hat styles (and is not likely to be added). It is very difficult to wear such a close fitting hat without looking like one is wearing a helmet, although I do concede that the way the casque frames a royal face can be very pretty. What do you think of the casque hat style for royal millinery?

Danish Royals Embark on Canadian Tour

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary kicked off their tour of Canada today in Ottawa, the nation’s capital. Mary repeated her grey wool felt casque hat with abstract leaf trim on one side. Once again, her hairstyle was the perfect compliment to her hat; I particularly love the way her side swept bangs balance the hat, preventing it from looking too much like a helmet. I sense this tour will be a fairly informal one and I think this modern grey casque provided just the right amount of formality to get it started. What do you think of this hat?
