Six Dresses and One Royal Purple Hat

Royal HatsWe saw Queen Máxima wear her dramatic purple wool hat at two high profile events last month- once while touring Japan and the other, for the Spanish King and Queen’s introductory visit to the Netherlands. Since debuting this hat a year ago, Queen Máxima has paired it with three different dresses- begging the question of which pairing do you think is best? For more details on each outing of this hat, click on each photo to link back to the original post:

  1. I adore this hat and love the monochrome look in photo #3. I wish the teal dress had some sort of a collar, then I would love that combo so much more; the current neckline is just so boring to me (maybe a necklace would help?).

  2. You have to admire her pluck. Good or bad, she never disappoints. We always have something to talk about with Max. That hat is super fabulous. The monochromatic outfit, with the daredevil neck piece is the show-stopper of the three. BTW, we here on the other side of the pond do ‘shiny’ for breakfast !! LOL

  3. I love all three looks, but I have to say the third, monochromatic is just a real winner for me! The necklace is intense, but so Maxima! Man, I just want to chat with her, she seems so outgoing, confident and creative!

  4. This hat is fabulous! I like it with all three, for different reasons, but the monochrome look takes it for me, followed closely by the teal dress, then the houndstooth.

  5. I think all three pairings are surprisingly good. While I don’t particularly like the peplum style in number 1 nor the peep-toe shoes in number 2, the hat goes so well with all three outfits. Someone is really clever to have some up with three such disparate looks for one hat. Do you suppose the hat was acquired for the teal outfit, since that seems to have been its first wearing, and later determined to work with the other two? Perhaps someone’s out looking for a fourth spectacular look right now!

  6. I like all of these color combinations. It’s great that she’s able to make such different looks with the same hat. I will disregard fit issues and accessory choices and choose the houndstooth as my favorite.

  7. Oh the teal dress is the best of the 3, yet I would love to see this hat paired with something red…..

    • I agree with elizabethmclaughline42, I really want to see this shade of purple paired with red. It could also work with pink and many shades of blue too. It would look lovely with the right brooch pinned to it too, and the Dutch Royals have a fabulous selection! Please wear it again Your Majesty!

  8. I’m for the third look–even if the necklace pokes me in the eye, it wouldn’t be Maxima if it weren’t over the top and this necklace certainly is. Altogether, I like it and approve of the fit of this peplum dress. Only negative is shiny fabric.

  9. Love the hat and, as others have said, there are flaws with each of the ensembles but my goodness doesn’t Maxima give it her best shot when she dresses to meet the public. Never a dull moment. For me the most polished looks are the teal and the oxblood outfits (I never minded the necklace). The hat colour works with the teal by the clever use of accessories and while the oxblood is monochrome it also works so for me almost too close to call – maybe, just maybe, the monochrome outfit by a whisker. The houndstooth *should* have looked the best but the peep-toe shoes and poor fit of the dress knock it into third.

  10. I like the hat best, with the third monochomatic look. This is one of my favorite hats on one of my favorite royal ladies.

  11. I love this purple hat and I want one! I love the contrast created by the purple hat and accessories with the teal dress, and the teal as well as the purple color really suits Queen Maxima, so I declare this one the winner! However, the dress is too tight and ill-fitting and makes her look heavier. I give the Spikey Necklace outfit second place, though once again, the dress is tight and the peplum a bit bulky, and the overall fit of the bodice isn’t quite right and makes her look heavier, and I don’t like shiny fabrics for day wear. That spikey necklace is just too much and looks rather dangerous! The houndstooth dress comes last, as while I love the fabric, and the neckline, I think it is too bulky and makes the Queen look heavier than she is, and the fabric looks creased, and the pattern doesn’t line up at the joined sections, and those shoes with a huge peep toe are horrid.

  12. well, I like the hat. But she still needs to find a dress/coat to go with it. The peplums are not flattering and the fit of the houndstooth is worng,,.. so the hat only is a winner.

    • Jean you are so right! This is a winning hat and the poor thing is still hoping that the Queen is still searching for a winning outfit to go with it!

  13. I love the contrast with the teal dress and purple hat/accesories. So chic and so Maxima! Spikey necklace outfit next then the houndstooth.

  14. I never understood this hat (or the shoes) with the green dress. The houndstooth won it for me until I saw the full length picture. The peep toes and the fit of the dress killed my like for this look. The last look takes the prize, even if I still think the necklace is too much.

    • I like the burgundy dress the best but I think the necklace looked terrible.I like the white and burgundy checked dress but the shoes are terrible. That leaves the green dress. That’s the only outfit that doesn’t have something terrible about it. I like that she tries things out and mixes and matches.

  15. I can’t decide! It comes down to which dress I like best, so I’ll have to vote for the spiky necklace ensemble. The other two dresses make her look heavier than she is.
