Sunday Service at Sandringham

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh attended Sunday service yesterday morning at the church of St. Mary Magdalene near Sandringham, their estate in Norfolk.  The Queen repeated her purple felt Homburg style hat with black velvet leaf trim. This more masculine of hat shapes is not one we see on the Queen often but in this glorious shade of purple, creates a striking ensemble together with her Stewart Parvin coat. I have grown to adore this hat and was pleased to see it on Her Majesty again- what do you think of it?

  1. What a nice redo of that hat brim. The proportions are much better now that it is smaller. Wondering if the colour differences (some have noted–in a few of the shots) might be due to lighting, camera flashes, time of day, etc. She is absolutely lovely in that “royal” colour. In my opinion, the outfit would be improved and look fresher using fewer buttons that are made to match either the purple or the black. Merry Christmas to all of the other hat lovers out there. Many thanks to our “Queen of Hats” for the time, effort and diligence you put into this blog. It is so enjoyable.

  2. Thank you so much for sharing all the links to previous outings for this hat and coat. I love this color on the queen, and it was fun to see the different brooches the queen has worn over time. I especially loved the photos from her visit to the barracks. She looks totally engaged with the soldiers, but the best shots of her are with the horse. You can see she still has a keen eye for evaluating both the horse and the handler.

  3. I do like this hat and I think the hats with minimal trim seem to work the best on QE2. She looks great in purple too. My only criticism is that there are too many buttons on the coat.

    • Today’s picture is better than some of this outfit, but there is a color mismatch between the hat and the coat. The hat is a redder purple than the coat. This is the smaller, newer version of the hat.
If you object to the number of buttons on the coat, you should see a photo of the dress, a link to which I cannot find right now. The dress is full of rows of gold buttons too!
