Our look back through all the royal hats we saw in 2014 now turns attention to Denmark- here are all of the hats that graced Danish royal heads this year. In cases where a hat was worn repeatedly 2014, it is shown here just once (usually, the most recent outing) and you can click on each hat to take you to the original post with larger views and detailed information.
Princess Benedikte
Princess Elisabeth (#6) and Princess Marie (#7 and 8)
Crown Princess Mary
Queen Margrethe
I suspect that there are hats in this group that are on your lists of favourite and least favourite royal hats of 2014. Which ones are they?
CP Mary won me over with most of her hats this year. #10, 13 and 14 were my favs of any royal household this year I think.
Number 4, 10, 14 and 23 are the best and number 2, 7, 8 and 17 are the worst.
The prize for the Danes goes to Benedikte in her structured red beret (4). Simply stunning. I also liked 26 and 34 on Margarethe. Otherwise things were either old hat (pardon the awful pun) or just boring in general for me.
I discussed this with my family, and we decided that the Danish Royalty actually had quite a good hat year. We award the first place prize to Princess Benedikte’s red beret, Photo 4. Second place would be Princess Benedikte’s brimless black hat trimmed with a spray of black feathers, Photo 1. Third prize is awarded to Crown Princess Mary’s purple pillbox, Photo 14. Fourth prize goes to Crown Princess Mary’s grey casque, Photo 13. Fifth prize goes to Princess Benedikte’s navy blue textured straw hat with wide, upturned brim, Photo 2. Sixth prize goes to Queen Margrethe’s charcoal grey trilby with modified pork pie style crown, Photo 21. Seventh Queen Margrethe’s red brimmed hat, Photo 24. Eighth prize goes to Queen Margrethe’s red straw hat with daisy trim, Photo 29. Ninth prize goes to Princess Marie’s navy blue fedora, Photo 8. Tenth prize winner is Princess Benedikte’s hat with the sharp upturn on the brim, photo 5.
The booby prize for worst hat of the Danish Royalty goes to Queen Margrethe’s blue beanie, Photo 17. It is the year’s worst Royal hat, unless some worse ones appear in the next few days. The second placer in the booby prize is Crown Princess Mary’s pink heavily feathered fascinator, Photo 11.
Princess Benedikte’s red hat is the best of all and the teenytubby is the worst, grrrr what a horrible hat. Princess Benedikte is the best of all of them….she oozes elegance and grace all put together. Princess Mary’s royal purple pillbox is second, I like a nice pillbox, it makes a lady look chic and well put together.
best 8, Worst 17
#34, the hat Daisy wore to Queen Fabiola’s funeral was a personal best for her I think. I love a pillbox worn forward. The material matching her jacket. It was so classy. Her smile was lovely as well!
I agree. It was very stylish but practical which I think is her signature look except at night when she is ultra glamourous. I like a lot of her hats including the despised teletubby one. I thought it went well with the scale of her overcoat with its unique style and swing and the vibrant blue suited her well. I don’t get the “bald” allusion either. I know she has hair. I guess what I really like is that shedresses as an individual in good quality clothes and looks relaxed, happy and regal but normal in them.
Benedikte’s structured red hat is sophisticated and attractive and is one of my favourites for the year. She is a good looking woman who dresses and “hats” well.
Mary and Marie look attractive in their hats but they are otherwise unremarkable which I think is a good thing for younger royal personages. It’s the person that matters not the hat (or dress).
#17 really is in a class by itself: awful. I do like several of Queen Margrethe’s hats: 16, 20, 22 and 34.
Princess Benedikte always looks nice, and hat #4 is of particular interest, but I like all of them.
Even though Crown Princess Mary is so attractive and her outfits so polished, her hats never call much attention to themselves. They go with her outfits, but think the hats don’t stand out. For a variety of reasons, Queen Margrethe’s hats always stand out.
Thank you for numbering the hats!
Princess Benedikte wins overall. I like all of her hats. P Elisabeth and Marie, not enough to judge. CP Mary, too many pillboxes!
Queen M – there is a greater variety than I remember. I thought it was going to be the straw hat with different bands all year long. I like #s 20, 21, 22, 26 & 31. 26 wins for me.
I just can’t tear my eyes off Benedikte’s red accordian. She looks so nice in it. The less said about Margrethe’s teletubby hat the better.
I reckon the best hat from the Danish ladies this year was Princess Benedikte’s stacked red beret, No:4. It suited her and contrasted well with her grey outfit. Runner up was her blue brimmed hat at No:2. She was my favorite hat wearer of the Danish ladies as she gave us variety. I didn’t hat any of her hats.
Princess Marie gave us too little to chose from, though I did like her often repeated navy straw fedora with a net veil wrapped around the crown and a silk flower on the side, at No:8.
Crown Princess Mary gave us a deluge of pillboxes. I do like these hats, but as so many other Royal houses also gave us pillboxes, I felt a case of pillbox overload. My favorite of her hats was the purple pillbox, at No: 14, and the runner-up is the hat to its left, the grey casque at No: 13. My choice of worst for her was the pink feather headband, at No:11.
It’s hard to judge Princess Elisabeth, but I did like the black bowler hat with a ribbon-edged brim, which was also appropriate for the funeral she attended. I wish we had seen more hat-wearing from her.
I wasn’t too fond of Queen Margrethe’s hats, and I especially hate the little hats she wears that sit so far forward that it makes her look bald. My favorite of hers was the grey fedora, at No:21, then the brimmed hats in blue (No:20), the orange and white (No:22, to the right of the grey fedora), and brimmed red hat at No:24. I loathed the blue Teletubby beanie hat at No:17, and I think it is one of the overall worst Royal hats of this year.
By the way HatQueen, the link to it doesn’t work. Here is a link to it for readers who are trying to find it.

HatQueen, do you think you could also label who the women are? When other posters refer to someone by name, I generally don’t know who it is if it’s a lesser royal (being somewhat new to royal watching). Thank you!
If you click on the picture, it takes you to the original post the hats (and people attached to them) appeared in, and the people are usually labeled there. I know because I almost commented how I wished I could see the hats from other angles before clicking one on a fluke and realizing that I could, haha.
I forgot to mention that feature- there are links in all of these “Year In Review” posts that will take you back to the original post featuring that hat (with additional views, larger photos and more detailed information and comments).
Thanks Lisa (and HQ), I have now seen No. 2 from another angle – and really do like it!
Great suggestion (thanks for reminding me that these royal faces are not all well known!) I have done this on this post and gone back and updated the previous “Year In Review” posts. Please let me know if there is any more confusion.
I adore CP Mary in the purple pillbox (#14 1/2)!!
Sorry–my monitor has #14 on a row all by itself without a number, so I thought the number 14 was for the hat before it.
Sorry for the confusion Jamie- I have reformatted the numbering. Let me know if it is still an issue.
Jamie I agree. CP Mary looked lovely in the purple pillbox, and I think it was her best look this year, and the best Royal pillbox of the year, and we did have a deluge of Royal pillboxes this year! I loved the outfit she wore it with too, especially the purple shoes!
Amazed at how few hats Mary has worn. And they all appear to be “wintery”. Where are some gorgeous summer hats from her, I wonder? Worst hat is easy – QM’s “pixie” hat, no.17. Best is somewhat harder as there’s nothing that really stands out on first glance… but possibly no. 1 or no. 2 (the colour definitely, although the style is a bit hard to judge from the angle). And I find myself also liking no. 24. I don’t really have a bias towards big hats, honest … but these small hats are all rather plain, both is style and colour. Funny how I never noticed the Danish penchant for small hats. Thank you HQ for drawing this to my attention!
My favorite from the Danish ladies is Princess Marie’s navy straw hat with the rose and netting. I love the way it frames her face, and the color is one that enables the hat to be worn with a variety of outfits over time. I have to say that the queen’s purple-and-black beanie is one of my contenders to worst of the year.
I appreciate Mary’s gray casque (#13) just because it’s a style not seen often today (I’ve been on an old movie kick and wondered what the name of that style was until just now!). I think it would work better with shorter hair though, or maybe curlier. I think the problem with a lot of smaller hats is that they don’t work well when long, loose hair draws the eye downward at the same time that the hat/fascinator is trying to bring attention up top.
Lisa, the grey casque (No:13) was one of my favorites of the year. I too wish she had chosen a different hairdo to set it off.
Did you like her hairstyle better when she wore this hat for the Turkish state visit in March?
Yes, much better! Mary seems to be more into demure pillbox-styles lately, and I think that this style is a good alternative for when she doesn’t want too much of an attention-grabber.
HatQueen and Lisa, I agree, the grey casque (No:13) was a good hat. It looked better with a neater hairdo.
I think P Benedikte looks so chic in #5! So modern yet so classic. The winners of the bunch for me though are CP Mary #13 and #14. The grey casque is perfectly worn and that purple pillbox is just divine. For worst it has to be Margrethe’s blue Teletubbie hat #17. I can’t even handle it. I really want to love P Marie in hats because I think she has a lovely face for them but so far she hasn’t been able to pull it together for me. Here’s to a new year!
Well I surprised myself…going by rows…first row last hat..honestly I am surprised but I do like it. Third row last hat…blue.
Row 8 first hat…red
Disappointed when Mary wore the colour Grey when in Canada this year.
Jane- as everyone’s computer/phone shows these hats in different arrangement according to screen width, I’ve numbered the hats. Could you confirm which numbers you were referring to?
My favorites are Crown Princess Mary’s royal blue wide-brimmed hat and the Queen’s black wide-brimmed hat that has an orange band and feather. My least favorites are the Queen’s Royal blue hat with the black patent trim and her bowl-type hat like the Royal blue, but this one has a brown and white striped feather sticking up in the very front.
I think you are referring to Princess Marie’s royal blue hat with the rosette on the side? It gets confusing with Princess Mary and Princess Marie!
I think C. P. Mary and Princess Marie have looked beautiful throughout 2014. I have to wonder why so many great style choices stop at the neck. Except for some great jewelry/tiaras, we don’t get the great impact on top of their heads.
BRF and others seem to do hats a bit better.
Bests: for Ben, the black, red, and navy in that order. Marie’s fedora. Daisy channeling Queen Mary at the end there. Worsts: Mary’s feather fascinator and the teletubby hat.
Agree with your worsts (#11 & 17). I think Mary’s purple hat #14 was one of the best this year.
Nothing special.
How few hats on Mary and even more Marie! Fewer than I’d have expected, somehow. I would agree, Benedikte’s is the most consistently attractive group, and Mary’s, while being attractive with no disasters at all, leaves us very little to talk about with its lack of variety and distinctiveness. The Queen suffers from the problem of disappearing hat hair, and that really makes some perfectly reasonable hats look less than attractive. If we hadn’t seen the Teletubbies hat SO often, I’d probably be thinking it was enjoyably quirky. I do like her large-brimmed grey with the orange feather, and the two-tiered burgundy hat with the feather is also a good one.
I also like numbers 30 and 32.I think her best hat was number 21. It has pizzaz! And The purple one number 14 is so regal and elegant.
I meant it would have been nice to see variation from pillboxes on Mary… Autocorrect fail.
Shocked to see Mary wore so few hats. And all fascinators or pillboxes! Her style is so fantastic I assumed it continued to her hats.
Hmm. Well Marge did her usual thing (I love her, but her jacket and shirt combos remind me of my old French teacher), Mary was oh so elegant but itwas to see more variation that all these pillbox styles. Marie was a bit of a yawnfest. Which leaves Benedikte who aced it. The winners for me are Ben’s beautiful rough straw with the wide brim, and Marge’s grey fedora which was a brilliant break from the norm for her.
I forgot about the grey fedora and it gets my nomination for best of 2014. Why don’t royal women of a certain age (this age!) embrace the fedora? It’s so chic.
Janae I also think the grey fedora was the best of the Queen’s hats, though it wasn’t my overall Danish favorite just because the dark grey color wasn’t that flattering on her.
JamesB I agree with you. Though my number 1 favorite Benedikte hat was the red stacked beret (No:4), though I loved all her hats.
