Buckingham Palace Garden Party Not Dampened by Showers

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh hosted their second Garden Party this summer season in the grounds of Buckingham Palace yesterday afternoon. Despite rainy weather, the Queen looked very sunny in her yellow hat with flat brim and crown, trimmed with rosettes and leaves on the side. Many of you will recognize this ensemble from its debut back in 2011 at Prince William’s wedding. I must admit that it has grown on me since then (I initially found all the right angles in the hat too severe) and have come to appreciate its simplicity. I particularly love that the Queen matched the trim on her umbrella to her ensemble (as she usually does).

This party was attended by two of the Queen’s four children and their wives, who both repeated beautiful hats.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her magnificent pale turquoise blue picture hat with an asymmetrical brim trimmed with a spray of dove grey feathers. Camilla carries large, dramatic hats so very well and this shade of blue, which looks amazing on her, makes this one of my favourite of her hats.

The Countess of Wessex repeated her spectacular beigey-pink asymmetrical waved straw hat. This hat, trimmed with a rosette and long, curling feather spines, is so light and lovely- exactly the kind of hat I imagine for a garden party. I was a little perplexed, however, at her pairing it with this rather heavy looking skirt and jacket. I much prefer this hat with the light and airy Bruce Oldfield suit Sophie paired it with at its fist outing.

It was so lovely to see Princess Alexandra of Kent at the garden party yesterday, back on her feet after a long illness last year. She looked regal in a royal blue picture hat trimmed with silk flowers, net and gently curling feathers.

T’was a wonderful day of millinery at Buckingham Palace yesterday, despite the showers. Which hat was your favourite?

Queen Mathilde Awards Singing Prize

Queen Mathilde of Belgiumattended the awards ceremony for winners of the 2014 Queen Elisabeth Singing Competition today in Waterloo, Belgium. For this event, Mathilde wore a circlet of ecru rose petals. I thought this new headpiece was unexpected and added a very pretty feminine touch to her pinky beige cotton lace dress. What do you think of this piece?

Imperial Couple Wrap Up Visit to Honshu

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan continued their visit to the Niigata Prefecture on the island of Honshu yesterday with visits to a rehabilitation center and the Kariyatagawa Disaster Prevention Park. The Empress repeated a petite dark slate blue disk hat trimmed with a large looped bow in the same fabric as her skirt. I am always happy to see Michiko in patterns or colour and to get both on the same day is a double win in my book.

Spanish King and Heir Honor San Hermenegildo Order

King Juan Carlos of Spain and the Princes of Asturias attended the biannual meeting of San Hermenegildo Order today in San Lorenzo de El Escori. Photos of this father and son, who were both dressed in military uniform with caps, were all the more poignant after King Juan Carlos’ abdication announcement yesterday. Prince Felipe, who stands 6 feet 5 inches tall, is going to make a very stately and distinguished king, isn’t he?

Millinery Style: Princess Letizia

With the big announcement this morning that King Juan Carlos will abdicate, Princess Letizia will soon find herself Queen of Spain. This monumental change in her role warrants a look at her millinery style, don’t you think?

When the Prince of Asturias announced his engagement to journalist Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano in November 2003, he took the public by complete surprise. While Letizia was cast into public spotlight (or rather, moved from one spotlight to another!) overnight, her fashion transition was fairly simple- she continued wearing the tailored business suits she had worn for her journalism career in her new royal life. This business approach to fashion, combined with Queen Sofia and the Infanta’s practice of not wearing hats, made us royal millinery watchers wait six years for Princess Letizia to finally wear a hat. Since this first hat in 2011, Princess Letizia has only worn two other hats (all three were at major royal events where hats were required):

I think these hats all betray Princess Letizia as a hat novice. The first, in pink straw, is a lovely shape and proportion for her but is terribly over trimmed – with a ruched sash around the brim, net veil, four kinds of feathers, and beaded rosette, it seems to be carrying everything but the kithchen sink. The second hat is simply too big and overwhelms petite Letizia while the third vertical plate with top explosion looks, unfortunately, like a giant earmuff. To be fair, I think it takes more practice choosing and wearing hats to get things right.

Two areas of Princess Letizia’s millinery style have been marvelously successful. The first are beaded hairpieces:

And the second is the traditional lace mantilla. If my recollection is correct, we have only seen Princess Letizia in a peineta comb once; I suspect that as Queen, we will see this beautiful Spanish headpiece on her much more often, and certainly more often than a hat. This is something to look forward to as she wears a matilla and peineta so beautifully.

When Princess Máxima and Princess Mathilde became queens in The Netherlands and Belgium last year, there was a noticeable increase in the number of hats we saw them wear. I do not think we will see this trend continue in Spain, as evidenced here by the few number of hats Princess Letizia has worn in the past. I will however, keep my fingers crossed that she has some millinery surprises in store for us!
