Norwegian Royals Celebrate Constitution

The Norwegian Royal Family visited Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament) yesterday as part of celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution.

Queen Sonja repeated a white hat with a ruched navy and white polka dot sash around the crown. It’s a great hat shape for her but I think it’s time to replace the sash with a simple navy grosgrain ribbon.

Crown Princess Mette Marit repeated her white wool calot hat, again worn far back on her head (a little too far back, in my opinion). In the past, I have not warmed to this icy hat but its pairing today with her folk art inspired coat was perfect.

The photos released do not show a close look at Princess Astrid’s hat; she appears to be wearing a white fabric pillbox hat with a pork pie style recessed crown and a spray of feathers on the side. I believe it is the same hat she wore in New York in 2005, with the addition of some pink feathers.

It looks like a lovely celebration was enjoyed by the family (including young Princess Ingrid) and I expect we will see a number of Norwegian royal hats throughout the weekend as festivities continue. Are there any hats that stood out to you in this group?

Queen Máxima Attends Youth Concert

On Tuesday, May 13, Queen Máxima attended a symphony concert geared toward young people (she joined an audience of 500 primary school children) performed by the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra. In keeping with the youthful and fun tone of this engagement, she wore a pale pink petal fascinator headband. While the colour is a little bland for this vibrant young queen, the idea of this headpiece is fun. I’m just not sure this was the right outfit to pair it with.

Norwegian Royals Host Israeli President

The Norwegian Royal Family welcomed Israeli President Shimon Pereson a two-day state visit to Norway on Monday, May 12. For the official welcome ceremony, Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore a most unusual headpiece. It appeared to be a mass of white flowers swathed in black tulle net worn as a sort of calot hat on the back of her head. This headpiece has a Chanel-esque look to it which makes me both awed and perplexed by it…. and at a loss for words. High fashion or highly unattractive? You be the judge.

Princess Astrid stepped in for Queen Sonja at this event, who was away on a private trip. It is difficult to see but Princess Astrid appears to be wearing a dark sienna orange fascinator. It’s an unexpected headpiece for her and that makes me rather like it. Crown Princess Mette Marit, May 12, 2014 | Royal Hats

Danish Summer Cruise Kick Off

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark kicked off their 2014 summer cruise schedule last week and boarded the Danish Royal Yacht, Dannebrog. Queen Margrethe repeated one of my favourite hats from her wardrobe, this charcoal grey trilby with modified pork pie style crown and feather pouff on the side. It’s a great hat on her, isn’t it?

Danish Crown Couple Visit Poland

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark began an official visit to Poland on Monday. For their arrival, Princess Mary wore a new pale pink-beige calot hat trimmed with a monochrome spray of feathers on the side Mary is certainly a fan of the calot and wears it beautifully, but this one fell flat for me. At first, I thought it was the colour of this hat that I didn’t like (or non-colour in this case) but I think it is actually the pairing between the hat and Mary’s white coat. Separately, they are both beautiful pieces but together, they don’t work. Perhaps paired with a brighter ensemble, this hat might come to life. What do you think?
