British Royals Open Kennels

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London yesterday. This event, where the dog-loving monarch officially opened the new Mary Tealby dog kennels, saw Queen Elizabeth repeat her grey and taupe bouclé covered hat with crown embroidered in rows of gold flowers.  I have always loved the way the gold embroidery on the hat is echoed on the sleeves, buttons, and hem of the coat, creating a unified ensemble. It is a subtle detail that I think, makes this hat sing.

Danish Royals Welcome Dutch State Visit

The remaining working members of the Danish Royal Family also were on hand today to welcome King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima for their state visit. Crown Princess Mary wore one of our favourite hats last year, her oversize purple felt pillbox with feather trim. This event gave us a better view of this hat than we saw during its first outing at the opening of Danish Parliament last fall, leading me to ooh and aah over the the colour, detail and scale of this hat. It’s so very good.

Princess Marie followed Princess Mary’s fashion formula, topping her chic cream coat with a purple fedora (and matching purse!). While I wish better photos were available, it looks like this new hat for Marie is a keeper. She wears fedoras exceptionally well and purple is a great colour for her.

Princess Benedikte repeated her ecru felt hat with contrasting swirl and raised brim at the back of the hat. It is a hat we have seen numerous times on Benedikte but one that looks great on her. With her oyster tweed suit and fur trimmed wrap, I thought Princess Benedikte looked stylish and elegant.

Many royal watchers were expecting the Danish royals to bring their fashion ‘A game’ for this state visit and when it came to hats, they certainly did not disappoint. Which was your favourite royal hat in Copenhagen today?

Dutch Monarchs Kick Off State Visit to Denmark

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima arrived in Copenhagen this morning for the start of their state visit to Denmark. As we come to expect with such high profile events, Queen Máxima arrived sporting a new hat. Clearly designed to compliment her amazing embellished grey coat, Máxima’s coordinating grey felt calot hat is trimmed simply in a band of grey velvet around the edge of the hat. The grey velvet creates the appearance of a small, upfolded brim and adds a textural contrast to the hat. It is a simple hat but one that looks elegant on her and perfectly compliments her embellished coat.

Queen Margrethe also wore a new hat today. Made of purple felt, her slightly domed pillbox is trimmed with a triple band of black sequins around the perimeter of the hat with a spray of black feathers and black sequin looped bow on the side. I thought the balance of colour in this ensemble was very well done (the hat tied Margrethe’s purple dress and black fur jacket together beautifully) and the use of sequins on the trim were restrained enough not to venture too far into showgirl territory.

Cambridges Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

The Duke and Duchess of of Cambridge attended the St Patrick’s Day Parade at Mons Barracks at Aldershot today. Kate repeated her chocolate brown felt bumper hat brimmed with braided bow at the side; she showed the hat off to great effect with another beautiful chignon. While this hat looks great on Kate, I thought its pairing today with her slate grey coat was a little surprising. I adore both pieces but I’m not sure I like them worn together. What do you think?

Danish Royals Remember Close Friend

Members of the Danish Royal Family attended the funeral of long time family friend Peter Heering yesterday. For this farewell, Queen Margrethe repeated her black wool rounded-crown hat with faux fur bumper brim and large button trim. Princess Benedikte wore a petite black hat with piping around the upturned brim and a short black veil.

Crown Princess Mary wore a larger scale black hourglass shaped wool hat with silk band around the base of the crown. Princess Mary’s hat was trimmed with a large black silk bloom and slim bow loops.

All eyes in the royal world will be on Copenhagen later today when the Danish royals welcome the Dutch King and Queen on state visit. As King Willem-Alexander is Queen Margrethe’s godson and the families have a close relationship, we can expect some rather grand and glittering events.
