Belgian Royals Inaugurate Vessel

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde were in Zeebrugge yesterday to attend the launching of the new navy ship P902 Pollux. The King and Queen were joined by their eldest daughter, Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, who has been named as the official godmother of the vessel. For this event, Queen Mathilde repeated her pale blue calot hat with straw cuff and coordinating suit. This is a great working look for her and the monochrome outfit somehow doesn’t read as flat or one-note as others we have seen recently.

Princess Elisabeth wore a braided headband in the same fabric as her dress, trimmed with a side rosette. I thought it was a perfect mini-fascinator for the 13 year old princess on one of her first major engagements and she wore it very well.

  1. The Belgians look like a very close, joyful family. The Queen usually dresses elegantly. The pale blue is her colour. The calot is cute. I don’t usually like jackets with big buttons, but this works because there is only one such button, and it is in the same fabric as the jacket. Princess Elisabeth’s clothes looked smart and age-appropriate. Her headband was cute. I hope she will be a future hat wearer.

  2. Both mother and daughter are just stunning, they so well compliment each other. Both are graceful and very dignified for this ceremony and as always the King looks so very handsome. They make a great looking family and I bet in private they are full of life and fun.

  3. I remain confused about why this is a calot and not a pillbox, but I’m not a hat expert. I like it anyway. This is a very good shade of blue. Light blues can sometimes look washed out. The King is handsome in his uniform. Princess Elisabeth looked quite sophisticated for a girl of 13 years. Her outfit was grown up enough to be right for this formal occasion without her looking too old for her age. I liked her braided headband, trimmed with a side rosette. I am still unclear as to why this is a headband and not a fascinator, though HatQueen described it as a mini-fascinator. Can anyone enlighten me?

      • Thank you HatQueen, and what beautiful pillboxes and calots are to be found on these links. I advise any other readers who haven’t visited these pages yet to take a look.

  4. I don’t really like the shape of Queen Mathilde’s hat because it looks like an old fashioned sailor hat. Her suit is beautiful and her daughter’s headband is very cute.

  5. Queen Mathilde looks so good in pale blue, as it really brings out her blue eyes, and flatters her fair hair and complexion. The cut of this suit is so figure flattering. I want this suit and this calot hat. This turn-out shows how to do a calot right. It needs to sit so it can be seen from all angles, and not worn at the back of the head looking like it’s going to fall off, like Crown Princess Mette-Marit wears them, and like Crown Princess Mary wore hers the other day. The hairdo needs to be neat, as Queen Mathilde has done here, not hanging down, like Crown Princess Mary wore hers at her recent outing.

Princess Elisabeth’s headpiece and outfit were elegant and just right for a young princess. Crown Princess Mette-Marit needs to learn that the hairband look is not for mature senior princesses, and start wearing more proper hats.

    • There’s nothing wrong with women over the age of 20 wearing a headband. It’s a hot item in fashion these days- don’t understand what’s the big deal. Same with wearing hats on the back of the head- not like it’s hurting ANYONE.

      • I think what she meant is that it’s always nice when princesses wear a more traditional hat than just a headband. When all the royals are together and the queens are wearing hats but the younger princesses are wearing feather combs or headbands, it doesn’t quite feel right to me.

  6. The Queen looks superb. Her hat and outfit look great on her, and she almost always gets it right. The princess looks really good too. It is always a delight to see this royal family out and about.

  7. The Queen has the most beautiful blue eyes! Her ensemble sets them off so well. Elisabeth looks lovely too.

  8. Elisabeth’s headpiece is by Fabienne Delvigne, she confirmed it herself. Delvigne was contacted, went to the palace, presented a selection to Elisabeth and she chose the one she liked best. All grown up now. And Elisabeth picked a winner, I like her headpiece better than mom’s hat. 😀

  9. The fascinator princess Elisabeth was wearing looks very much like the ones from Fabienne Delvigne we had in our shop.
    Looks pretty on her.
