Dutch Monarchs Begin German Visit

After completing their state visit to Denmark, King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands moved on to begin their two day visit to Germany today. For their arrival in Luebeck, Máxima repeated her grey felt hat with ‘slice’ brim sharply upturned on one side. We have seen this hat numerous times on this young queen and today, for the first time, it was paired with this tri-toned dress. The hat is a staple for Máxima and looks great on her. I think, however, the unattractive dress doomed this outfit from the start. Next week we’ll compare all the outfits she as worn with this hat and I suspect, this one will not win. What did you think of Queen Máxima’s hat and dress combination today?

Norwegian Royals Welcome Latvian President

King Harald and Queen Sonja extended an official welcome to Latvian President Andris Bērziņš yesterday in a ceremony on the Palace Square. Despite the miserable weather (or perhaps in spite of it), Queen Sonja channeled spring in a new lavender felt hat. Trimmed only with a large flower made of sculpted ribbon, this hat is defined entirely by its shape- a stylised, exaggerated top hat with flared crown and short, rolled brim. While I adore the colour of this hat with Queen Sonja’s purple and grey paisley fur trimmed cape, I’m not a fan of its slightly cartoonish shape.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit repeated her eggplant purple wool unembellished calot hat. I also though this hat was a miss, as it did not relate well to her beautiful ruffled Valentino coat. The placement of this hat continues to feel off to me (I’d prefer it higher, over the crown of her head) and adds to the the odd neckline confluence of ruffles, scarf and hat. The overall ensemble is off-balance for me between the floaty dress and wool hat.

Princess Astrid looked to be wearing a textured beret style hat. I suspect her black ensemble is in mourning for her husband, who passed away in late January. It looks like a smart hat, although we need a close look to be certain.

I am afraid that none of these hats excite me at all. Do any of them speak to you?

Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall Visit USA

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall spent the second day of their visit to the United States with stops at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, George Washington’s Mt. Vernon estate and the Shakespeare Company. Camilla began the day in a new coat topped with one of her go-to wool winter hats trimmed in faux fur around the brim (the same hat we saw her wear last week).

Update: according to several people who attended these events, Camilla started the day without her hat and added it half way through. Reports are that it was a breezy day and I suspect Camilla added hat hat to protect against the wind. Whatever the reasons behind this addition, it created a very unusual sight as we seldom see royal women carrying their hats.

I have promised a closer look at Camilla’s many hats in this style- stay tuned for this later this week, after we get through all of these state and foreign visits!

Day 2 of Dutch State Visit to Denmark

For the second day of the Dutch state visit to Denmark, Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary joined the King and Queen of the Netherlands for a visit to Samsoe Island. This visit unexpectedly saw Queen Máxima and Princess Mary in a pair of new brown fedora hats. Queen Máxima’s hat in chocolate brown felt features a slightly higher crown (with characteristic fedora pleats) and an unstructured brim; her hat is trimmed with a wide grosgrain ribbon around the base of the crown and an unstructured bow loop on the side. The slightly floppy hat contrasted with Máxima’s supremely structured camel coat and the varied shades of brown between hat, coat, purse and gloves kept the ensemble from being bland or boring.

Crown Princess Mary’s hat in beaver brown felt featured a more structured brim and a more defined ‘pinch’ at the top of the crown. Her hat was also trimmed in grosgrain ribbon with a flat, traditionally shaped bow on the side. While I like the more restrained and traditional fedora shape that this hat follows, I found the styling of Princess Mary’s outfit today rather perplexing. The brown hat paired with brown sweater, brown boots and black skirt make sense but the addition of her pale blue-grey coat, to me, does not. Unfortunately, the disharmonious outfit decreases the impact of the chic and stylish hat.

Fashion foibles aside, it appeared as though the two couples shared an enjoyable day together. Which of these two brown fedora hats struck your fancy?

Imperial Family Attend Recital

Members of the Imperial Royal Family attended a music recital today in the Imperial Palace’s Peach Bloom Music Hall performed by the graduating students of five university music programs. This event brought out a number of new hats on their first outings. Crown Princess Masako’s  hat, with a domed crown and and upfolded brim, was covered in pink silk and edged with pointed pink lace trim around the edge of the brim. The same lace edged her jacket, tying the ensemble together. We don’t commonly see lace trim used in this way on royal hats and while it is almost too sweet, it gives some much needed texture to this new hat.

Princess Kiko and her daughter, Princess Kako, both chose new brimless white hats. Pricess Kiko’s rounded pillbox was made of the same same embroidered white silk as her jacket. The wave pattern, embroidered into the fabric, tied the two pieces together and gave a little interest to the perimeter of the otherwise plain hat. Princess Kako’s bumper hat was trimmed by a silk ribbon wedged between the brim and crown of the hat. The same ribbon was used for a flat bow at the back.

As usual, the remaining Imperial princesses showed a little more colour and variety in their millinery. Princess Hanako of Hitachi wore a new brimless teal bumper hat in the same fabric as her suit jacket. The bumper shape, which creates a rolled ‘ring’ around the hat’s crown, and the ruched fabric wrapped around the side of the hat, gave this petite piece considerable interest and movement. I thought the colour was particularly becoming on Princess Hanako.

Princess Nobuko of Mikasa wore a navy hat with curled brim and large, multi-looped bow on the side. The brim was slightly raised on one side, giving the illusion of a jaunty, diagonal brim. Princess Akiko of Mikasa wore a pale pink with squared crown. The hat looks to have a very petite flared brim, making it look like a very modern version of a cloche and giving marvellous contrast to her feminine, ruffled suit.

Princess Hisako of Takamado (seen behind Princess Akiko, above) wore a simple black felt boater style hat. The hat was trimmed in a dark olive green crushed silk band that coordinated with her suit. While I think this ensemble is also new, I believe it is a replica of the purple and black ensemble we saw Princess Hisako wear back in December.
