Members of the Belgian royal family gathered at Notre Dame Church in Laeken today to take part in an annual Te Deum mass in memory of deceased family members. For the service, Queen Mathilde repeated a grey felt Garbo style hat with rounded crown and slightly floppy brim. Trimmed simply with a slim leather band around the base of the crown, this hat’s impact comes from the relaxed shape of its brim. It’s a stylish piece that Mathilde wears well (jump over to this post to see this hat paired with other outfits)

Prince Nikolaus and Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein (who is a first cousin to King Philippe) also attended the service this year. Princess Margaretha repeated a simple black brimless bumper hat. During past outings, this hat has appeared to be a pillbox but if you look closely at this photo, you’ll see a rounded crown surrounded by a bumper brim.
Queen Mathilde has totally knocked it out of the ball park with this hat and coat combination. Garbo hats can descend into costume territory sometimes, but this one is truly a fashion statement. The only other Royals that I have seen really pull off the Garbo are Queen Mathilde, Queen Maxima and CP Victoria of Sweden. RIP the great Greta Garbo.
I love this hat on Mathilde! The coat is lovely as well.
Love it, love it, love it!
One of the Queen’s prettiest hats. The style of her coat is so chic and her shoes add a bit of pizazz to the overall look. Once again the Queen knocks it out of the park!
Like everyone else I love QM in this lovely brimmed hat. It’s a great shape for her face, and very elegant with this lovely grey coat.
Queen Mathilde’s Garbo hat in very versatile and pairs well with all the different outfits she has worn it with, but I do like this outing with the light grey coat the best. I vote for this hat for the win! Princess Margaretha’s black bumper hat is a good companion for her hairstyle and hair colour, and her coat, but it lacks the wow factor of Queen Mathilde’s Garbo hat.
I also like the hat with the coat–lovely.
Grey looks good on her, nice hat, very soft appeal, the pillbox would look wonderful on me too 🙂
I really like the use of grey as an alternative to black for mourning/memorials like this. My only complaint is I don’t care for the little leather lariats as they seem a bit too informal for this particular occasion.
Margaretha’s hat, like @TiarasRUs said, pairs very well with her hairstyle and hair color.
Jake, I agree. I think it would have been more successful with a wide grey grosgrain ribbon or even black.
Queen Mathilde — a class act! She looks lovely.
I love Queen Mathilde’s hat and I want one! Its pairing with this coat is its best pairing yet I reckon. It is definitely odds on to win Best Repeated Royal Hat: February 2016. Princess Margaretha’s simple black brimless bumper hat is a good hat for a church service, and the black stands out in her auburn hair very well.
