Danish Queen Sets Off On 2016 Summer Cruise

Queen Margrethe set sail yesterday on the first leg of this year’s summer cruise, stopping first on the island of Lolland for a two day visit. For the first day of engagements, which included her arrival in Nakskov harbour and visits to a cherry winery, museum and sculpture installation, the Danish Queen repeated her pale blue bumper hat with braided trim and side bow. This hat has been on the shelf for a few months and the break made me happy to see it again. It’s a lovely piece and I particularly admire how the felt of the hat matches perfectly with Margrethe’s silk crepe suit. Matching the colour on different textiles is tricky at best and this ensemble coordinates so well.

This is the first solo summer cruise for Queen Margrethe since Prince Henrik’s retirement and I can’t help but feel for her, although she looked upbeat and happy at yesterday’s events. You can see a short video of this visit (and see this hat in action) here. What do you think of this design?

  1. Only Margrethe could pull of this hat, and she does it so well.

With Henrik in retirement, does that mean he doesn’t accompany Margrethe at all? Seems a bit odd, but it sounds like he’s had a hard time in his position. I, too, feel for Margrethe . . .

  2. I am not a fan of bumper hats in general, but the color of the hat and her outfit is beautiful. I am surprised, however, that since she is so artsy that we don’t see more of a variety of hat styles from this queen.

    • I have often wondered why such an artistic person has such a limited wardrobe too. She seems cheerful but I miss the Prince. She must too.

      • I think it’s one of those things where if you’re artistic, you have so much…else…going on in your mind that you end up reaching for basic pieces over and over again for the every day. I’m in an artistic line of work (house design and staging) and I’ve ended up with a capsule wardrobe of black, denim, navy, white, stripes, and the occasional floral for my every day look, because simplifying the everyday leaves more mental freshness available for me to bring to the design table.

My two cents at least 🙂
