Day 5 Royal Ascot: Duchess of Cornwall

Royal Ascot  The Duchess of Cornwall made her fourth appearance at Ascot this week (the most she has ever attended, I do believe) in her cream straw hat with upswept brim and navy straw wrap around the crown.

Christie: No one does angles quite like Philip Treacy. How gorgeous is the line on that upturned brim! And the finishing is just amazing. I’m not a huge fan of the feather placement.

Fiona: Nice to see a bit of contrasting colours on Camilla today and I am glad she went for the 2 colours in the hat. The hat itself is really gorgeous, loving the extra band of dark navy on the crown, and that floating feather is magnificent! The polka-dot dress is quite classy with the collarless coat over, it, I think it works well overall. My only criticism is that the colour of the hat is more of a gunmetal grey colour and although I am generally a fan of mixing up shades, I think it would in this case have been better if it was a closer navy to the coat.

Royal Hats: I’ve been pouring over previous photos of this hat and while it photographed today with a strong grey cast, I really think it is actually navy. I love a classic white and navy hat for summer and I’ve always thought this design was beautifully balanced (even without one of the statement feathers it used to have!)

Jill: The Duchess of Cornwall has made consistently lovely hat choices all week but this look is by far my favorite. Although it is a very similar (if not the same) profiled brim, this tailored trim with the beautiful bumper in the contrast color is very elegant and classic. The narrower cut to her coat is very flattering and allows the whimsical polka dot dress to shine through. The open collar on the coat paired with the upturned brim really shows her face beautifully and the off-white straw to her face gives her a marvellous glow. Fantastic!

  1. Her cost per wear on this hat is very good. It’s still lovely, I’m just not sure it’s a good match for the coat (he shades of navy are too off) and it’s a bit wintry for Ascot. That said, it’s been awfully chilly for June in the UK.

  2. I think Camilla looks superb – I know that the shape of the hat and the coat are her ‘go to’ shapes but this pairing looks better tailored and much more tightly put together. I love the contrast of colours in the hat.

And let us not forget the PoW – he really has nailed that art of elegant dressing. Quite beautifully put together.

  3. To sad that hat lost second feather! But overall – I do like this streamlined outfit. Good colours, lovely dress, better fitted coat ( and undergarments) .

  4. The brim and placement on the head of this hat have been all over the place, and this is one of its best outings yet! A bit surprised she repeated this whole ensemble so quickly (even the brooch is the same from May), but it’s one of my old favorites. Still a bit disappointed the second feather disappeared.

  5. Always think you can’t go wrong with navy and white and this hat proves it again! Love it and the whole ensemble looks fabulous on Camilla. She really does big hats so well – giving Princess Michael a run for her money!

  6. Ooo, I love it!!! She looks really fabulous, and apparently took all of your comments about lack-of-color to heart. 😉

  7. This is a fabulous hat. Camilla’s hats are usually among my favorites. You have been most generous with your compliments all week. How would you rate this year’s royal hats? I have particularly enjoyed hat watching with the Princess Royal this year. Thank you for the interesting coverage.
