to seventy-six years ago today when Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, wore this wonderful cocktail hat on a visit to the Central Hospital Supply Service Clearing House at Roehampton. Talk about wartime glamour!

Love hats with veils!
Divine! I’d love to see this style worn today.
Fantastic hat! Very stylish!
I love this. Glamour indeed.
A beautiful photo and a beautiful hat.
I have always wondered whether a long and wide veil like this gives the wearer blurry vision – or a headache – after a while. There is certainly no visual escape from those dots. Does anyone have personal experience of wearing a large net veil?
In the past I’ve worn a hat with a little eye veil. My experience was that one is focusing beyond it, and so one doesn’t notice the veil – much as when you’re driving with wind screen wipers, you don’t actually find your eyes distracted by the sweep if you’re looking at the road beyond.
For a moment I thought that flowering branch was part of the hat 😀 Princess Alice is lovely!
Wow! That is most glamorous.
Stunning! I love the veil.
Fabulous picture. Alice is often overlooked in favour of her more famous or beautiful sisters in law, Elizabeth and Marina. But she was really quite stylish in her day, the Beaton shoot around her wedding is just stunning. This hat is fabulous 40s chic too.
THAT is a hat! (Wonderful photo, thank you!)
Glamorous and beautiful. What a great picture to wake up to! She looks like she stepped right off the silver screen. I do love these glimpses into the past.
Oh, how beautiful. Thank you, HatQueen. Love seeing Vintage: Hats from the Past!
