Members of the Luxembourg royal family took part in the closing procession of the Octave of Our Lady of Luxembourg on Sunday.
Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore a new black straw hat with upswept ‘slice’ brim, trimmed with a wide Petersham ribbon hatband, folded into an abstract bow at the side. While it’s a versatile new design for her, it’s close enough to this diagonally brimmed straw black hat that I’m left more than a little curious about its addition.

Back in late January, our friends at Luxarazzi interviewed milliner Sylvia Martinez about her participation in a recent exhibition which included designing pieces for the Grand Duchess and Hereditary Grand Duchess. She sent these two hats to the Luxembourg royal ladies and in a surprise move, Princess Stéphanie wore this design to this event. In golden beige sinmay, the percher design features a lace covered disk base trimmed in pearls with a multi looped straw bow at the back. The hat fits Stéphanie’s style well (and she’s done very well pairing it to her bouclé dress) although I would have loved the placement to be further forward, jauntily angled over her right eye.

Princess Claire topped her pale blue chiffon hat with a pillbox hat in the same hue. The straw hat, in palest blue nubbly straw, features a slightly domed crown and is trimmed with a swath of widely woven net veil. After our recent marathon look at pillbox placement, I think this one is placed back slightly too far and I’d prefer it scooted up an inch or two.

Princess Amalia and Prince Liam of Nassau joined their parents on the balcony. Princess Amalia sported a sweet pale blue hair bow.
It’s lovely to see the Luxembourg royals and this is one of the few annual events outside National Day celebrations when we do. What do you think about the three new hats we saw in Luxembourg this weekend?
Royal Hats 
GD Maria Teresa’s hat is nice by itself but she appears overwhelmed with big hat and coat. HGD Stephanie’s hat is lovely in Luxarazzi’s post with better placement. I disagree that it’s tiny; Stephanie’s placement is off. Princess Claire’s hat offers an interesting halo effect.
MT’s hat looks good to me. Claires hat is a kind of Copyright of Charlenes hat at the christening but Charlene wore it much better. Stephanies ( I love her!) is to tiny. Even with a different angle it would be to tiny for her.
MT is in a really good shape for her, the long coat gives her a bit more height and I like the broad brim.
Stephanie is struggling with that hat, its kind of floating in mid space on her head. And I don’t get the frock. Claire is in a beautiful dress (doesn’t Kate have the same one?) but the hat is strangely big and also floating about on her head a bit.
Maria-Teresa is her standard super chic self, but the cut of the coat is not super flattering on her.
Stephanie deserves so much better! The shoes are fine, at least we have that…. but I don’t understand how any of the rest of her outfit happened. Why, really? Cut, colour, fabric, hat, I don’t know where to start.
Claire. She has so much style in general. I love this dress. The hat is not fabulous but given what we have today, it’s ok.
This is a sad looking trio. The choices of hats and clothes are wrong in every way……not flattering in style or color.
All three hats are disappointing in some way.
~GDMT’s looks too wide for her height, given its angle – and with that dress neckline so high, it appears to be clamping her head down on her shoulders.
~And I second commenters’ misgivings about Stephanie’s hat, not to mention the corn yellow colour which doesn’t flatter her.
~I like the concept of Claire’s linear 50’s hat, and I don’t mind the placement – but I do think the hat is a bit too wide. It also needs to be worn with the back bun higher off her neck. I can see Maxima, Mathilde, Charlene and especially Catherine DOC wearing a narrower version — but they would do so more successfully, pairing it with short but statement earrings and, in Catherine’s case, a structured coatdress. But in Claire’s case the simple lines of the hat are overwhelmed by the bulky, fussy, unstructured dress, dangly earrings and casual low bun placement
I vote for Princess Amalia’s blue hair bow as my favorite, although I think Princess Claire’s hat is perfectly fine.
The Grand Duchess’s big black hat, unfortunately, really is not particularly flattering to her. The dress looks nice, and I like the coat with it, but the hat is overpoweringly big on her. The other black hat, probably equally big, actually looked more stylish.
Princess Stéphanie looks as though she’s wearing an ice pack on her head in her fourth picture and possibly a giant sugar cookie in the first picture. The hat goes nicely with the dress. Relocating the hat might help, but if that’s not sufficient, perhaps several of these sugar cookie/ice packs could be ordered, the materials shared, and a larger head covering created.
An interesting trio. I think the Grand Duchess has a good strong hat here, and it suits the occasion and her leading position well. Stephanie’s is difficult to judge properly, as the placement is so wrong! If ever a hat called out to be worn forward over one eye, this is it. On the other hand, I don’t think bringing Claire’s hat forward would work unless the hat itself were redesigned. It’s so large and flat that it has to stick out somewhere, and I suspect this is the least worst option in terms of where that is.
I wonder if moving Princess Claire’s hat further forward on her head would really help, given its strange elongation. An odd hat. Princess Stephanie’s hat is charming, and would, unlike Princess Claire’s, have been greatly improved by the alteration.
Love the slice hat. The other two are kind of frumpy. Ugly really.
That’s a good hat for Stephanie and her dress, although I agree that the placement could be better. I prefer the Grand Duchess’s other black hat because it sits higher over her face. She is rather obscured by this one. I don’t like the strangely elongated shape of Claire’s. But the two younger ladies might have been happier with picture hats under that sun!
Maria Teresa looks wonderful here, and if this hat isn’t Fabienne Delvigne, then she oughta sue for copying her style so well haha. I don’t mind Maria Teresa having two black hats because I think they are different enough; I think this one seems like something she could wear every day, while the Treacy hat is a little fancier and deserves to be at more formal appearances.
If Stéphanie had placed her hat towards her forehead, this would’ve been one of her best hat appearances to date! Unfortunately she often gets something wrong in the details; come to us for advice next time Stéphanie! We are very nice and will help you win in the hattery stakes!
Part of me really wants to like Claire’s hat, but I’m more so confused by how flat and large it is. A more traditionally shaped and sized pillbox would’ve been better, although with the sunshine, I think something with a brim would’ve been best.
Overall these three couples looked great, there were just some problems with the details. Sad we don’t seem to see the Luxembourg royals out in hats as much as we used to.
I don’t care for Claire’s hat at all, and I think MT’s hat is not flattering. It looks too big for her. Stephanie’s hat is the only one I like, which is odd, because normally I love those big slice hats. The pillbox is too flat and unstructured. It looks like it is about to slide off her head. I love the Luxembourg ladies, and normally I like their hats, but today only Stephanie’s hat gets a thumbs up.
I agree that all three look lovely, but really don’t care for Princess Claire’s hat. It’s just too fiat, and Otto far back on her head. I would prefer it in a more contrastiong or saturated colour. For a beautiful woman, she looks rather washed out in these photos. I also would prefer Stephanie’s hat farther forward on her head. So for me, the Grand Duchess looks the best, as she so often does. She seems secure in her style and looks marvellous.

I agree with you on the placement of the percher and pillbox hats–they both needed to come forward. And I agree that they both match their outfits well. I don’t care for the new black hat because to me it seems too big and too helmety, plus the bow looks messy. I much prefer the Grand Duchess’s earlier black slice hat with under brim embelishment.
All three ladies look lovely. GD MT’s hat is great. HGD Stephanie’s hat is fine, but as is it feels like a blob of something that might slide off at any moment. A more forward jaunty placement would help a bunch I think. I’m not bothered by the placement of P Claire’s pillbox, but I do think it would be more successful if it were just a bit taller/deeper. It feels a bit flat.
