Hat From the Past

Royal Hatsto August 31,1979 and the christening Prince Carl Philip (whose second son with wife Princess Sofia arrived yesterday on this same date!). Queen Silvia’s peach ringed headpiece with roses made a glamorous statement at the time and inspired several more recent Swedish royal looks.

  1. I didn’t even realize there was netting on Sylvia’s until Ruthtoo pointed it out! I love the queen’s look, and the way she matched colors with little Victoria, and also feel like this was a very glamorous hat for the times. Victoria’s updated versions pay tribute to her mother and I love both the white and the pink versions! Color in your outfit at a christening or baptism allows for the baby to take center stage as he/she should be. At this time, remember, that the birth of little Prince Carl Philip made him the heir to the throne. It wasn’t until later that the law in Sweden was changed to allow the first-born child, which was Victoria, to be the heir apparent.

  2. While I’m not enamored with the placement of Sylvia’s bun (the high bun looks looks like an injection of the early sixties to this very seventies look) – see this front view here: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/37/54/61/375461af9817b7a0b66b03d6df57a49d.jpg I just adore the side view from her left http://www.theroyalforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=5175&stc=1&d=1051988816 — so this headpiece gets a YES from me. The headpiece worn by Victoria is indeed a beautiful tribute to her mother; I bet Queen Sylvia was deeply touched.

  3. Queen Silvia looks very pretty in her headband. I love the headband as a change from a traditional hat once in a while and how sweet that Victoria pays tribute to a retro look of her mother’s.

  4. I love the slimmer bands on Sylvia’s original version and the color on Syl! She looks very glamorous! She is so beautiful! I also love that she didn’t wear white or cream at the Christening. I may be one of the few that doesn’t like the mother matching the christening gown and blending together with the baby quite so much. It is very sweet of Victoria to imitate her mother. They must have a great relationship!

  5. I like the updated style of this headpiece, without the veiling. But I prefer the Queens hairdo, with a higher bun, which keeps the headpiece from looking like a turban. I also like the way Princess Victoria pays homage to her mom’s style and practices what she preaches about recycling.

  6. I really like this and always have. The 70s version was very glam on a young Silvia, and the updated version is lovely on Victoria. I prefer the pink but regardless, it’s a lovely tribute. She loves her Mum’s vintage style doesn’t she – which I really love to see.
