thirty-five years to October 7, 1982 when Queen Elizabeth wore this flowered bowler hat on a trip to Australia. It’s a cheeky design with a slight circus costume vibe that I’m surprised not to have seen before. Australian readers- do you recall seeing this hat?

Thank you for posting all the hat photos, Maja, much appreciated. I do think Maxima looks smart here, it’s just not a hat shape I really take to.
Thank you, Maja, for these great pictures! I’ve seen a few others also of this appearance by Queen Maxima, I have to say that my favorite part is the unusual earrings and bracelet set. The problem with the hat, in my opinion, is that the shape is very informal, almost like something you would toss on the keep the sun off your head when you go to the beach or an outdoor activity — it just doesn’t go with the formality of the activity. (Though I don’t consider myself enough of a hat expert to suggest what she should have worn instead.) I do like the color combo of her outfit with the jacket and hat, just not that floppy brim!
It’s pretty awful, isn’t it? Even for the period…
The hat is appealing–the way the flowers almost overmatch their brim is a bit surreal though. What I do remember is that style of light dress with the pleated skirt.
Well my goodness ho could I have forgotten that hat! We were newly arrived in Brisbane and hugely interested in the Queens visit for the Commonwealth Games, but I have no recollection of this hat!
