to this day, 20 years ago. We usually think about the Princess of Wales, Duchess of York or other ‘younger’ royals as ones who embraced the polka dot craze in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I adore that the Queen Mother got in on the trend as well.

The Queen Mother wore this polka dot outfit again a couple of years later at a family wedding, but she swapped the spotty hat for a plain one- see the link below. I loved the fact that she experimented with new fashion ideas even in her late 90s!

Yes, the Queen Mother’s sense of style was unerring.
This short video is well worth viewing in its entirety- lots of good quality close shots of familiar faces. You’ll see the big stack of ribbons plus flower on this hat, and hats worn by Anne and HM; HM’s is another of those peculiar ones from those decades: http://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/video/queen-elizabeth-and-the-duke-of-edinburghs-golden-wedding-news-footage/815815106
This is going to sound slightly nutty, but I like that there seems to be a hairpin showing up near the blue band. It’s always nice to see that royals can have these ordinary problems too.
I have never seen this before. I love, love, love it! What a woman! She was “with it” until the end!
The blue matches her eyes beautifully.
Love this! I think she was inspired by Diana’s outfit at Fergie’s wedding (10 years on admittedly!!) Still the exact same style she always wore, but with added sass!!
I had forgotten about that outfit of Diana’s. You are right, the similarity can’t have been just a coincidence.
