Icelandic State Visit To Sweden

Iceland’s President Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson and his wife Eliza Reid arrived in Stockholm yesterday for the start of a three day state visit. For an official welcome at the Royal Palace, Queen Silvia wore a simple brown felt cloche hat with wide velvet hatband in a slightly darker shade. This shape is so familiar on Silvia that I assumed it was a repeat – she has nearly a twin of this hat in black but I think this brown version is new.

Princess Sofia wore a black cocktail hat with what looks like a button base and trim that includes feathers and some type of bow.

It’s worth giving compliment to Eliza Reid’s felt bumper hat with bow trim, a piece that looked great paired with her faux fur scarf. The colour is particularly lovely on her.
Thoughts about these hats?

  1. Sylvia’s is serviceable, Eliza Reid’s is handsome and I love the colour combination of her outfit. I like Sofia’s hat of itself, but I don’t think it is the best shape for this dress – I think a wider shape would have created a more balanced look. (Or conversely, of course, a narrower dress silhouette for this hat.)

  2. I agree with all the comments. The Queen’s ensemble it too monotone. Ms. Reid’s coat needs to be tailored, but the colour combination and the shape of the hat are excellent. Princess Sofia’s hat looks interesting. Does anyone know why she kept her hat on inside while the Queen and Ms. Reid removed their hats?

    • As it was inside the palace, which is Silvia’s home, it makes sense she had removed her hat; I would also guess that now Eliza was an overnight guest in the Queen’s home, it was regarded as her “home” at the moment too, meaning she didn’t have to continue wearing her hat. As Sofia doesn’t live there, she still wears her hat as a guest.

  3. This cloche style is a good look for Silvia, and a nice departure from her usual pillboxes and calots. What I’m not a fan of is the all-brown look; she’s fallen into the monochrome look Máxima and Mathilde often sport, and not in a good way. Because the brown of her hat and coat match her hair, it all looks a bit drab unfortunately; the black cloche would’ve been more successful, or this brown one with a different colored coat.

We need more photos of Sofia in this cocktail hat! Based on this one photo, it looks to be a very successful hat outing for her, and it deserves another outing ASAP.

Eliza Reid’s hat is quite delightful, and a very successful piece for her; the color is great, and one not often seen on the royals. What is not successful is her coat, which looked ill-fitting in all the wrong places (shorter sleeves, too much bulk around the shoulders); streamline this coat, and I think the neck wrap would look more successful.

Three successful hats, but with mixed outfit results.

  4. I agree with you Shue. Ms Reid’s is a dainty hat, which would look better with a less bulky outfit. Still, the colour combination as a whole is gorgeous on her — what an unusual and inspired choice for winter.
I do wish Q Silvia had added a coloured hat and gloves to her outfit- the all-over-brown look, added to her hair which is the same colour brown, is quite sombre. And I’m not a fan of the effect of her dark, bulky-crowned hat sitting so low on her forehead – I’d prefer to see more of her face; especially since she is so rugged up. We’ve seen this coat before, worn last year with the hat below, which I think is a better choice https://royalhats.wordpress.com/2016/01/19/norwegian-silver-jubilee-part-1/

    • I definitely agree with you, mcncln, that the contrasting hat worn by the Queen last time she wore this coat was much better. (Also, on that occasion, you can see a bit of the blue of her dress even with the coat on, to tie in the color. This all brown, as noted, is quite drab, and definitely looks like it was chosen more for warmth than for fashion.

  5. I am not crazy about the hat/scarf combo. The color is great, but proportions are off. The scarf is too big and she needed her hair up. All these districted me from the hat. Plus the coat is too bulky. You can see it does not fit her right.
