Golden Anniversary in Norway

King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary yesterday with a service of thanksgiving at Oslo Cathedral, the same church where they married.

For the occasion, Queen Sonja wore a chocolate dotted net veil headpiece tucked into her hair. I thought the headpiece was a bit of a surprise for Sonja, who usually wears hats for major events, until it dawned that the use of the tulle veil might be a bridal reference? If that’s the case, it’s a sweet touch I can’t take issue with, especially as the colour complements Sonja’s hair and her gold suit so well.

Crown Princess Mette Marit wore one of her characteristic headbands, this one a new design in black with small rosettes curving around the ears. Princess Märtha Louise also wore a headband style headpiece in metallic silver. The only hat of the day was worn by Princess Astrid, who repeated her turquoise straw brimless design embellished around one side of the design with with ribbon work flowers.

Queen Elizabeth’s Iconic Hats: 1980s

 Our search for Queen Elizabeth’s most iconic hats brings us to those worn during the 1980s. Again- we’re looking for hats “widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence” and each suggestion you make should be qualified as such. As always, feel welcome to link to articles, youtube videos or photo galleries featuring a particular hat but please avoid pinterest links and any hotlinked photos.

The 1980s had some memorable fashion- which hats from this decade do you consider to be iconic ones for the Queen?

Church Hats in Scotland

We’re going to postpone our Tuesday series on Queen Elizabeth’s iconic hats until tomorrow to catch up on a number of new and repeated hats that appeared in Scotland Sunday morning for church. The queen led her family in a new turquoise felt hat and matching coat trimmed with a mass of copper feathers on the front of the hat. The feather trim is an unexpected colour clearly ties to the ensemble, thanks to the open collar on the coat which reveals a good look at the Queen’s copper and teal silk floral dress. The hat shape looks a bit clunky to me but I’m going to reserve full review until we have a better look.

The Duchess of Cambridge repeated her modified navy felt saucer percher hat with raised back, trimmed in overlapping felt leaves. It’s a simple hat that pairs beautifully with her navy trimmed coat.

Princess Anne repeated her purple felt fedora with wide brim and layered, slim hatband (with looped bow and feathers on the opposite side as this view). Autumn wore a beret based percher in black or navy that looks to be trimmed with a side bow. There aren’t any similar hats we’ve seen on Autumn before, leading me to suspect this is a new design.

Interestingly, the Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise Windsor were both in attendance but neither were in hats (see this photo gallery of additional shots). So Sunday’s outing saw four hats- two of which appear to be new. Thoughts?

Hat Renovation?

Reader George A sent me a private note last week asking, “I thought I would ask your opinion on whether the Crathie church hat from two weeks ago is in fact an altered version of an older hat. Do you think it’s this one with the brim made to slope downwards instead of upwards? The roses seem the same, as does the crown.”

The older hat George A refers to is this one, which made its debut June 6, 2012;

Here’s the hat worn August 5, 2018 to church:

OK readers- what do you think? Is the hat worn in Scotland this summer a modified version of the 2012 hat or a completely new design?
