The Belgian state visit to Korea continued today with a busy program that saw Queen Mathilde attend a seminars on sustainable development and climate change and visit the smart city Songdo while King Philippe participated in a business forum, a health care symposium, entrepreneurship networking and a taekwondo demonstration. For these engagements, Queen Mathilde repeated her red fabric-covered button percher hat, trimmed with a double looped bow and black quills.

During its first outing, I didn’t appreciate how the hat’s pleats link not only with the skirt on this ensemble, but with the jacket’s pleated collar and cuffs. Yes, it’s a lot of red but the colour is fantastic on Mathilde and I think the smaller scale of this brimless hat makes it work. It’s polished and punchy- two good things for a royal hat on tour.

Thoughts about this hat’s second outing?
Photos from social media as indicated
Mathilde at her best. It’s great how the hat matches the pleats. And yet, even despite the red, it all feels very balanced. Very well done!
I really love this. Mathilde looks great in red and even though it’s a lot, it’s not too much.
I do like this hat, good colour and nice detail. The one reservation I have is the effect of the feathers coming out of a spout like a fountain. I can see from the side /back views that it isn’t actually a spout, but that’s what it looks like from the front. I can’t help feeling there could have been a more subtle way of anchoring the feathers, or a slightly different placement of them, or of the folded fabric, that wouldn’t create this effect.
Mathilde at the top of her game! this is a lovely example of haute royal style, and the matchy-matchy theme is exquisitely executed.
I agree with Jake and Sunny that the first placement was better, but this placement by no means bad. I love all the detail in the hat, and the quills are a sweet touch (although i think that bent one needs replacing :).
Added bonus: in the first twitter video from W. Dehandschutter, hearing Mathilde speaking English (“zet’s emezzing!”) in her soft French/Belgian accent.
I prefer it without the feathers they look a bit thin and doesn’t add anything imo , again the whole ensemble is well thought off,
Red is such a good colour for Queen Mathilde. Not many blondes can wear it so well. It’s a good hat but I preferred the placement of the hat the first time. It’s funny as it’s just a few centimetres but it makes so much difference.
I can’t believe it’s been so long since she last wore this! I do prefer the placement of its first outing, but otherwise a successful reappearance of this fantastic cocktail hat.
Everything ties in beautifully and Queen Mathilde carries the whole ensemble off to perfection.
I love this hat! The pleating and trim add interest, but it feels balanced and goes so well with the look. Definite success!!
