80 years to August 6, 1939. It’s a lovely picture painted here- a wonderfully whimsical feathered hat on a young Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), who appears to be having a lovely time with American First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. There’s a joyful lightheartedness here that would be obliterated less than four weeks later with the outbreak of WW II.

Both hats, in their different ways are lovely. While the dress styles may be different, both ladies sport hats, pearls, and gloves. Polished!
Queen Elizabeth looks so beautiful in this picture and in the video!
I was struck by the men (Protection Officers, maybe?) running to step up and stand on the running boards of the cars!
I love Queen Elizabeth’s hat style during this period. This gorgeous hat (and full-length frock — Mrs Roosevelt wore a kneelength day dress) can be seen in this video https://youtu.be/u07LucbSBZg?t=12 0:20-1:21; plus more lovely hats/outfits worn on that tour as a bonus.
That’s a great video, mcncln. The contrast between the formal queen and the always-sensible Eleanor is really striking, but both ladies are sporting pearls.
Wonderful video!
Thank you so much!
Incredible video mcncln! Thanks so much for sharing!
Mrs Roosevelt was so statuesque! Just a wonderful hat.
I think Queen Elizabeth looks so elegant in her hats and outfits in this video. The particular hat HQ posted is so very beautiful. The feathers and shape add such whimsy. Her Majesty was really an elegant and stylish woman.
Fantastic!

Beautiful! Lovely hat and one of the best photos of QEQM I have ever seen.
