This Week’s Extras

On Friday, members of the Imperial royal family were spotted arriving to rehearse the enthronement ceremony. Empress Masako wore a buff silk bumper hat; the Mikasa princesses were in hats as well.

Yesterday, the remains of Queen Elena of Romania were brought from Switzerland and re-interred in Romania. For this ceremony, her granddaughters wore black and grey hats- Her Majesty Margareta in a grey angular bandeau with black trim, Princess Sophia in a black cuffed bumper and Princess Marie in a black calot.
The following new millinery designs caught my eye this week:
Classic navy felt hat with mushroom brim and black trim by French milliner Clothilde Toussaint
Natural straw bandeau with statement bow and black hexagon veil by Australian milliner Jill Humphries
Love the personalized zodiac constellation trim embroidered on this hat by US brand Jennifer Hoertz Millinery
Jaunty bright pink straw design with wonderful offset brim worn and made by Aussie milliner Chris Mullane
For our dear gents, a beige felt fedora with stitched hatband and brim edge by German milliner Nicki Marquardt

Stylish take on a rain hat in layered pink and black cut-out fabric by Canadian milliner David Dunkley
Luxe burgundy velvet halo bandeau with flowers and shooting crystals by British milliner Justine Bradley-Hill
Wonderful black coiled crown hat with Spirograph statement brim by Dutch milliner Eugenie van Oirschot
Pale blue tall-crowned hat with wide brim and trailing silk hatband by Australian milliner Nerida Winter

The Danish monarchy released two new photos of Prince Christian to celebrate his 14th birthday
Lovely to see Sayako Kuroda at last week’s “Kanname-sai” festival at Ise Grand Shrine. I suspect we’ll see her at her brother’s enthronement ceremony tomorrow.
For a little over-the-top royal entertainment, we have the Bourbon Two Sicilies princesses sharing themselves making an entrance.
We end this week with a great montage shared by Kensington Palace of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to Pakistan last week. The documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey airs in North America Wednesday night (and is, for the moment, available here). It’s authenticity and candid sharing is compelling.

  1. I discovered something that may be of interest to some of us in this hat loving group, even though there was no royal hat in sight. Today, HM wore a very bold floral print dress, until now hidden by a beautiful pink Stewart Parvin coat and matching hat. Pink and black make a very nice (if loud) combination. Certainly not a mourning black which we hope to see in a couple weeks. Hat Queen, I hope you don’t mind this entry being a little off-course, but sometimes clothing is discussed also, like the wedding post from Saturday.

    • How interesting! Thank you for spotting this!
This is a new hat, is it not? I wonder whether this could be a replacement for the following? The coat looks similar, but of course the colors are so far off because of the car windows.

      • Fairbanks, the queen’s hat on Sunday was actually premiered on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014, with a plain, pale blue coat. I prefer the original combination, since a tweed coat and straw hat don’t coordinate as well, IMO. BTW, the hat you posted resembles a cake of some sort, doesn’t it? Speaking of cakes, please see below.
PS I miss seeing Philip out and about; I hope he’s in good health!

        • You’re absolutely right, of course: Sunday’s hat is the one you’ve shown above. I know this hat (and entire outfit) but didn’t think of existing hats while I was trying to figure out what coat the Queen was wearing Sunday. I wonder how the dressers thought of this hat. It always makes me wonder about the storage system. Are coats, dresses and hats stored together or by color — of what, coat, hat, dress? Of course, there probably a lot of other light blue hats that would go too, but this is a particularly pretty hat.
Thanks for setting me straight on Sunday’s hat!

  2. I am really looking forward to the Japanese Enthronement Ceremonies this week! Thanks for the rehearsal photos!

    Happy Birthday Prince Christian!

Looking forward to the hats from the wedding of Prince Jean-Christophe Napoléon and Countess Olympia von und zu Arco-Zinneberg.

    – Very pretty navy felt hat with mushroom brim and black trim by Clothilde Toussaint. I think this would be beautiful on the Duchess of Gloucester.
    – Stunning natural straw bandeau with statement bow and black hexagon veil by Jill Humphries. Princess Marie would look lovely in this.
    – Love the teal veiled bandeau with wonderful leather flowers by Felicity Northeast millinery. Princess Ingrid or Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones.
    – I can see the Duchess of Cambridge wearing the luxe burgundy velvet halo bandeau with flowers and shooting crystals by British milliner Justine Bradley-Hill.
    – I love the pale blue color on the tall-crowned hat with wide brim by Nerida Winter. I can see this on Princess Beatrice or the Duchess of Cambridge.
    – Beautiful lightness on the gold-trimmed percher hats in pink & blue by Millinery By Mel. Countess of Wessex or Autumn Phillips?
    – Zara Phillips for the crimson silk covered bumper with pleated crin ruffle and silk rose by Bundle MacLaren

  3. Looking forward to your return, and especially your coverage of the enthronement, HatQueen. Sounds as though you are using some precious down time during your travels to give us this delightful post. Many thanks!

Looks as though the Cambridges were excellent goodwill ambassadors in Pakistan. Prince Christian is getting to be a handsome young man. Oh, the Bourbon Two Sicilies…I hope they mean to be ironic, but I somehow don’t think so.

We rarely see stitching used as on the Nicki Marquardt fedora — what a great detail. Splendid drama in the veil of the Jill Humphries bandeau. She really sells her checked turban with that styling tip, too! But I think the burgundy velvet bandeau looks the most royal of the new designs.

  4. Lovely, HQ, we’ll be looking forward to it. Hope your work trip isn’t too tiring, and that you get some down time too. Wishing you smooth travelling!

  5. I’m in the midst of a week of travel for work- when I’m home Tuesday, I’ll post all the hats worn to the wedding of Prince Jean-Christophe Napoléon and Countess Olympia von und zu Arco-Zinneberg on Saturday, and any hats worn to the Japanese enthronement tomorrow.
