Prince of Wales Commissions Namesake Vessel

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were in Portsmouth today to officially commission a new aircraft carrier in the British naval fleet,  HMS Prince of Wales.

For this occasion, the Duchess wore a new hat in pale slate blue felt with a wide upturned bumper brim.

A number of us have been wishing Camilla to experiment with some new hat shapes and she’s done that here. I wish, however, she’d taken this further with a more saturated colour or some contrast (or trim or texture- anything!) to break up the very smooth lines of the hat and coat. For me, it falls a little flat.

Designer: Philip Treacy
Previously Worn: This hat is new

As expected, the Prince of Wales wore the uniform and cap of his ranking as Admiral of the Fleet. Incidentally, today he was also granted the title of Honorary Commodore-in-Chief, Aircraft Carriers.

What do you think of the Duchess’ new hat in Portsmouth today? And- do you think the baker of the official cake was tipped off on her ensemble’s colour or made a lucky guess?!

  1. Yes I agree about a contrasting trim for the brim of the hat. At first when I saw it I thought it was a very tight/short faux fur but on closer inspection found it to be the same felt. A short fur trim would have been very festive on this hat. The front of the brim is a touch too tall for my liking.

  2. Rare moment for me; I always like HRH’s hats. HatQueen is spot on: Contrast done with different texture; I’m thinking a fur trim, or a bit of a veil, perhaps, or a different shade of blue even. This time her darling husband wins! lol

  3. I am glad I am not the only one having doubts about this hat, it doesn’t frame her distinctive shaped face very well , it does however looks warm, comfortable and ready to brace a storm

  4. This hat seems very ‘heavy’ and I don’t think it helps that it sits so low down on Camilla. Her large hats work because of their ‘airiness’, This is like a pudding bowl on her head! I don’t mind the colour, although hear what others are saying about a darker colour.

  5. Well I’m surprised that this isn’t landing better. I love it! I think the shape is fabulous, a diet version of one of her go to dustbin lids. I think the shape provides the interest, any extra froof would just detract from it. The colour is icy cold yes, but elegant for a smart winter engagement.

I think this is a fab addition to her millinery wardrobe, and knowing Camilla, we’ll be seeing this shape a few more times!

    • “Diet version….” so funny!!! I think you might win for “best quip of 2019!”

I have to agree with you. I kind of like this hat. The color is fabulous, and it’s pure Philip Treacy. It’s a hat that is subtly screaming to be noticed.

    • I agree – I like it a lot as a contrast to her others. I would actually prefer the hat as is, but more trim or embellishment on the coat.

  6. It is interesting that this brim has the volume of a classic fur toque. Had it been fur (or faux fur) there would have been a nice colour contrast between the brim and the felt crown. As it is all felt, it looks very sleek, in a Treacy kind of way, but pale. I agree it washes out the Duchess a bit, specially with her light hair colour.
So: good shape, not enough colour.

  7. Oh, Camilla, what have they done to you?  This looks like a footstool perched on her head.  Has the designer been looking at some of Princess Beatrix’s hats and thought that kind of design would suit Camilla?   It really doesn’t.  Coupled with the Imelda Marcos shoulder-pads and the giant pocket flaps this outfit from head-to-toe is a complete no. I think navy accessories would have been a better choice and perhaps not the heavy suede boots

I love her willingness to wear a large statement hat – but please no more like this.  I know you said it falls a little flat but I don’t think there’s any risk of that happening!

  8. Nice hat, but a bit boring, as you say. The outfit needed a bit of trim, or contrast, or something! She looked very smart, however.

  9. This feels like a hybrid of the classic large upswept brims and the couple of oversized structured berets Camilla has worn this year. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s a success; this would be a large hat for many people, but it seems a bit twee on Camilla, and it’s plainness is very obvious (not a in a good way). I do love the ice blue outfit with black gloves and boots to create a great color contrast.

  10. I would like to have seen it in a slightly icier shade of blue , a bit more “frozen” coloured. But I am delighted to see her in something so different and like the overall look with the boots
