Queen Margrethe’s 80th Birthday

Queen Margrethe celebrates her 80th birthday today, unfortunately, with far less fanfare than was originally planned. The Danish court has released some wonderful photos this week to celebrate, including:

New portraits with Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Christian

New photos of the birthday girl, taken at home

Gallery of photos taken throughout her life (with some fantastic hats!)

A look at some of the Queen’s passions (scroll to the second clip which shows describing, in English, the hat for one of her costume designs, which she models wonderfully!)

Gallery of past milestone birthday portraits

A look at the commemorative coin, minted to celebrate this occasion

To celebrate Queen Margrethe’s birthday today, let’s raise a glass and share our favourite of her hats (or tiaras, if you wish!). For me, it’s the coral straw double-brimmed picture hat with red dotted paler pink upper brim she wore to Royal Ascot in 2002- such great colour with a little bit of bonkers from the pink and orange curling trim. Which of her hats stand out most in your memory?

I think this one, from 1994, was repeated recently, so there’s hope for some of these hats

    • Oh, yes, Maja!
The first photo in your post— the purple one. Don’t recall ever seeing it before and it is marvelous!
Perfect brim, scale, and the color is so perfect for her. She needs to repeat this hat as soon as circumstances allow.
Thanks so much for passing these along!

  7. She has worn, and continues to wear, beautiful hats, but of course we have to include this cheerful number: Embed from Getty Images

    • I was going to add this one to my list, so I’m very glad you did! Regardless of the hat, it’s such a delightful photo and shows Queen Margrethe at her best! She just exudes life. I love it!

  8. Thank you Shanon!

My gosh. All of the hats in your post are remarkable. My top choices are the yellow/ gold straw hat in the first set ( minus the daisy jewelry, although I had similar pieces a million years ago), and the navy and the pink hat in your third set. Queen Margrethe has her own style, and she always exudes confidence and optimism.

  9. Happy Birthday Queen Margrethe! I think she’s had some lovely hats over the years:

  11. I love to see Queen Margrethe in big hats. Here’s a timeless classic, Paris 1970:

    • Mcncln, it’s YELLOW!! The woman next to her didn’t seem to enjoy it as much.

    • These are just fabulous hats! The one at the christening is just so gorgeous! The polka dot hat is amazing. I always thought Princess Diana brought polka dots into fashion, but Queen Margrethe was at least a full decade ahead! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
