to this day, 60 years ago. Fresh from a holiday and participation in the Red Cross Training program in Norway, Princess Margrethe of Denmark arrived at Victoria Station en route to her 21st birthday party at the Danish Embassy in London in a brimmed hat.
We’ll pop into her hat closet for an inventory next week.
What a lovely happy picture. The style of hat, especially worn pushed back as it was, makes her look like she’s a girl in school uniform!
It’s a charming look for the young Princess. I wondered why she’d celebrate her birthday at the Danish Embassy in London. According to Wikipedia, she studied at prehistoric archaeology at Girton from 1960–61, so perhaps she was on her way back to school.
Yes- she was a student at Cambridge. The original image notes that she would be joined at the embassy by 60 undergrad students from Cambridge for a celebration dinner and dance.
