Ascot 2021 Day 1: Prince of Wales & Duchess of Cornwall

After not seeing a royal hat at Ascot Racecourse for an unthinkable two years (last year’s only royal hat at the races was worn at home), it was fantastic to see several royal hats at the races today! We’ll kick things off with the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Camilla debuted a new hat today in pale aqua blue with parabuntal straw domed crown and sinamay sidesweeping wide brim. The design is finished with a padded silk hatband and knotted bow at the side, secured with a blue covered button.

It’s another beautifully proportioned piece, the bow balanced with the raised brim on the opposite side. I particularly admire how the different materials on crown and brim give respective weight and lightness to these elements.

  1. Love Camilla’s new hat and the colour is lovely on her! Unusual outfit but a lovely overall look, I really like it.

  2. Cams looks perfectly summery in her outfit today, particularly with the multi-blue stripes of the coat. I love that she chose the liveliest of the blues for her hat – she always has the best hat game in my world

    • I think she always looks smashing. To be honest, I’m often not a fan of her hats as they just seem so big. But this one is just awesome and the coat is too. And the mask matching the coat is great. I loved Diana and all that, but I’m really happy for Charles and Camilla. They complement each other in a way Charles and Diana never did.

  3. They both look fabulous. It looks like Camilla’s mask matches her coat. Which is just splendid. So flattering. Love Charles’s antique topper.

  4. Camilla looks lovely in this hat, but as she already has a couple in this icy blue color and it’s a sibling of the white one worn at the opening of Parliament, it doesn’t wow me so much unfortunately.

What does wow me is her coat. Multicolor stripes in a flattering shape? I’m so here for it and hope she does more of this! If I can’t have saturated colors for the spring/summer, I’ll take this as a great substitute.

  5. I like big hats so I really like this one. Camilla wears them so well. The color of this one is lovely and goes so well with that gorgeous coat. However, to be honest, I am so glad to see Ascot back that I would be happy even if she was wearing a hat that we had seen a dozen or more times in the past.

  6. Wow, this is really happening! I like this hat better than the ivory almost-twin version worn for the opening of Parliament. As HQ pointed out, the bow balances out the tilt of the brim, and the color is dreamy. I’m also joining in the admiration of the ribbon coat — gorgeous!

  7. It’s Ascot! In person! Hooray! They could wear buckets on their heads and I would still be happy!
Fortunately, Cams has shown up in a lovely lovely hat with matching coat (and mask!). I like the fact
that the different textures and dimensions of the trims play with the light. And the button in the center
of the loops is a nice tailored touch instead of a flower. Chaz looks fabulous as always, his tailoring for
Ascot is always impeccable and that antique topper is just perfection. It’s Ascot! In person! Hooray!

  8. Camilla looks incredible! Her hat is the loveliest shade of blue. It reminds me, however, of a white one she has. Such a great style. Her coat is fabulous and I love that her mask matches it. She’s got great mask game!

  9. If you saw this hat in a shop you’d say ‘that’s a Camilla!’ That’s no bad thing, her look has become very much her own and it’s dramatic and stylish.

The stunning coat is the star here, I love the idea of it, and it is so flattering. The hat feels like a twin of the white one worn to Parliament. Good to see Camilla in a new hat, she has a roster of repeats we see a fair bit, this is a great addition.

  10. I love these hats! I think Camilla’s whole ensemble is so light and airy and the hat is beautiful. Didn’t she wear another hat recently with a “stuffed’ hatband? I liked that one too.

    • The “stuffed” hatband has been a feature Philip Treacy has used on a few collections now. Along with the shine of the silk, it gives some contrast and dimension to these monochrome pieces, doesn’t it?!

  11. Her hat is divine as is Charles’s antique silk hat. What I simply adore and think exceedingly beautiful is the fabric used to make her coat. I so desperately want to have that fabric for a dress of my very own.
