On October 14, 1986, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Great Wall of China while on state visit to the country. She wore a memorable purple felt hat with double brim for this occasion, and repeated it on Maundy Thursday in April the following year.

This is a fun shape and a good color. It’s angled nicely and avoids that line across her forehead. All in all, a good choice. Nice to see her emerging from the turban period.
I like both outings of this hat. Catherine, I agree that purple is a great color on HM.
I found this very interesting photo of today’s ensemble – – – recall yesterday’s discussion about the lighting playing tricks on our eyes? The ensemble looks so different when flooded with light in the display!

My that is so nice.
This is a great outfit, the purple is just lovely, and the style of the suit is quite on trend for the time, quite boxy with shoulder pads. She looks quite up to date, which wasn’t always the way at the time. Very elegant. The Maundy Thursday coat is fine, but that hat had a better match with the suit.
This is a super little double brimmed hat on Queen Elizabeth. She always looks good in purple. I prefer the hat with the purple suit in China where it looks younger and more jaunty.
It’s tricky to see all the details of the hat from the pictures but it’s a very pretty design.
