Ascot 2023 Day 1: Princess Royal & Family

We’ve got some hats to catch up from the first three days of the races (my apologies for not keeping up). Let’s get to it!

For the first day of this year’s racing meetup, Princess Anne repeated her muted teal sinamay hat with rounded crown and high, sidesweeping brim embellished with a darker teal slim silk hatband and curling, multi-looped straw bow interspersed with trimmed teal and burgundy feathers.

Photos really don’t do this ensemble justice- the silk coat was luminescent, with both the teal and burgundy threads of its weave beautifully visible. And the hat- well, it’s impeccably finished, beautifully balanced and the absolute perfect proportion for Anne. Amy Morris Adam’s work is just gorgeous and deserves far more widespread recognition.

Peter Philips wore his black top hat while his girlfriend, Lindsay Wallace, wore an ice blue vertical beret percher trimmed with a swirl of crin and branch of white blossoms.

Mike Tindall repeated his black antique silk top hat while Zara wore a biscuit straw boater hat brimmed with dyed hatband, back bow and flying bow tails wrapping around one side.

What’s so special about the hat is it’s gradation of colour- the hatband is a pale sagey green at the back that lightens on the side and transitions to pale pink at the front while the back bow moves from blush at center to green on the loop tips. This custom dyeing was done with such a light hand to create the most delicate colour wash. It’s another ensemble that showed beautiful nuance in person that does not effective translate to photos.

  1. A great Ascot 2023 debut look for Anne, although I wish the hat was pushed forward ever so slightly. A lovely look for Lindsay and the sky blue suits her well.

We all know I love bold colors, but Zara rocks these pastels, and I’m certain they looked better in person as opposed to being fairly washed out in most of the photos. The boater is a great hat shape for her, and overall she had modern femininity down perfectly with this whole ensemble.

  2. I love this boater on Zara. Thank you for pointing out the details so well which we can’t pick up on TV. A Day 1 winner for me.

  3. Zara is definitely my favourite royal hat wearer, always love her choices. The boater is a new shape for her and I think it really suits her.

  4. So glad you pointed out the ombré colors in the hatband, HQ, since the effect is so subtle that it doesn’t show in all the photos. Kudos to Sarah Cant for this elegant detail.

  5. Of course Zara’s hat is new, as is her entire outfit. This has come up before in this blog.
Although I have some issues with Zara’’s practice of borrowing or having an artist donate things for her photo shoots, and thus some issues with sustainability, I will say that that it has been a long time since I have seen Zara wear something that fits her.
    The hat was lovely.

  6. Is that Princess Royal..Ann behind Zara in picture #9? The trim on the top of the blue hat is outstanding, however it seems different to the other photos of Anne.’s hat?
Zara’s hat is the nicest I think I have ever seen her wear. Major excellent change.

  7. I was very interested in what you say about seeing the hats in person as opposed to in a photo. I think this must apply to the whole ensembles of the royals – the subtle and luxurious fabrics, the perfect cut and fit and the match in reality rather than with photo flash…
    I rated Zara’s hat #1, Anne’s #2 and Lindsay’s #3

  8. Love this pairing with the silk coat and dress for the Princess Royal (although much prefer the nude accessories, as the last outing). Zara looks fab in her boater.
Hope you had a great time HQ!!
