Easter Sunday 2024

Members of the British royal family attended Easter Matins service at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on Sunday. Queen Camilla repeated a jade straw hat with velvet hatband, brim binding and intertwined loops.

The colour of this hat is wonderful and I’m so impressed that not a single stitch on any of the velvet elements is visible.

Princess Anne wore a dark green felt beret trimmed with black cut feathers, a feather pouf and a bow in the same tweed as her coat with what looks to be a silver brooch at the center.

I think we all like a small hat that packs punch but this one adds to an overall look that’s just too busy.

I sincerely apologize for taking such an abrupt and extended blogging break. This post does mark a regular return to this space and I hope you’ll rejoin conversation about all things royal hats.

  1. Just idly clicked on your blog and frightened my family by squealing with joy – I have missed your posts and this community so much. I do hope all is well with you.

All hail the return of Hat Queen!

  2. Absolutely over-the-moon thrilled you have returned to your blog. You were surely missed! what a fantastic way to start the work week!

  3. What a delightful discovery for my Monday, a resurrected Royal Hats for Easter! (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun!) Grateful to have you back, HatQueen, and I hope you are doing well after what I assume was a much needed break.

While I was a bit disappointed to not get a new hat for Easter from Camilla, I’m glad it’s this trusty repeat that still shines after all these years.

I don’t mind the contrasting greens for Anne, but the matching bow does bother me in terms of being too matchy-matchy for my personal tastes, and the black feather trim is kinda messy; it also color clashes with her other brown accessories, and makes me wish some brown Lady Amherst pheasant feathers had been chosen instead.

While I’ve always preferred something extra for Easter in terms of hats and their trims, Sophie’s simple borrowed beret is lovely on her and pairs fantastically with her violet coat.

I like the bright jade color of Sarah’s outfit, but otherwise I was left quite underwhelmed. While it was probably a bit too chilly, I would’ve loved to see her bring back the jungle green ensemble from Eugenie’s wedding:

I hope all my fellow commenters and readers are doing well, and I leave you with this fun hatted Easter extra (assuming HatQueen allows it): https://youtu.be/tbFMhxiVNpM?si=mWEiIKwLEJHzr3w5

  4. HatQueen,

What a lovely surprise to find a new post! I hope all is well. You have been missed. Postings about the Royals have been sadly incomplete without your expert eye for millinery details. (As seen in your comment about the velvet stitching not visible on the Queen’s hat).

    welcome back!

  5. I have checked periodically and am so happy to see you back in action, Hat Queen! Good to have you back and hope all is well.

I do really love Queen Camilla’s hat. There is something rich about that jade green.

I like Sophie’s whole outfit a lot and would like to see it again with her hair in a tidy chignon.

As far as Anne’s is concerned, I think the large bow of coat material was slapped on to tie it to her coat, but think the hat would have been so much nicer without it. I don’t know if it would then look too dark but there must be another hat she could have worn to tone with the lighter green coat and saved this one sans bow for a darker ensemble.

  6. Hat Queen: Welcome back! We surely have missed you all this time; I hope you are well and happy. This Easter, a lot of green was chosen – very nice for this time of year.

Camilla: Great all around – the saturated jade green is awesome!

Anne: I actually enjoy the explosive energy of the piece. I couldn’t find any photos of this hat’s first outing, not even the photo you have in the Inventory. Originally, it was placed further back on her head, so the crazy Hedda Hopper-ish exuberance is less noticeable.

    Sophie: OK beret, nothing spectacular.

Sarah: Give the headband to a 12 year old member of the family.

Non-Hat Dept: I couldn’t help noticing Edward’s wonderful Easter tie!

  7. How very lovely to have you back!

Camilla and Sophie are my winners – Sophie’s whole outfit is very chic. Ann’s hat looks like the tweed trim was added to make it match the coat (and it was a bit overtrimmed to start with), and Sarah’s headband looks homemade. I wish the trend of oversized Alice bands masquerading as hats would die a death now.

  8. What an absolute joy to see you back HatQueen! No need to apologize, we all know life gets busy but just know that we were all thinking of you and wishing you well the whole time you were gone.

Love love Cam’s hat, it’s so rich looking. I agree that Anne’s hat is too busy but with some alterations it might be a good choice going forward. Sophie’s whole ensemble is lovely to me, all repeats and no frou-frou, just clean and simple. I do like her hair down here. Sarah’s headband is nice but it reads a little jeune fille to me, she should pass it on to one of the younger family members. A textured headband or something without embellishment would look better for her I think.

  9. I’m so glad to hear that you will be posting more often. I’ve missed you and the hats.

Thought maybe since our ‘grand hatter’, Queen Elizabeth, passed there wasn’t going to be as much to talk about.

  10. Welcome back – thank you! I’d almost stopped hoping! Although royal hat wearing isn’t quite what it was since the late Queen left us.

I love this hat of Camilla’s. I hadn’t realised it was as old as it is. It still looks lovely, suits her well and looks good with this outfit.

I hadn’t realised Sophie’s coat lost a button, but her ensemble was great too and the hat very nice.

Anne’s hat looked like an Easter bonnet – over trimmed. It didn’t need the black pompom.

Sarah’s headband looked cheap and too juvenile for her. Something Mia Tindall would wear beautifully.

I shall put this back in my favourites and call in again.

  11. welcome back! It’s great to know we’ll have some more hat chat to come, but moat importantly hope that you are well

to the hats! This is a veteran hat of Camilla’s, but it still looks great. I think she could maybe treat herself to a new green number, but equally I admire the thrift.

Anne’s sadly looks a tad home made, as does Fergie’s Sophie however looks very elegant and put together. Definitely the standout here.

Really missing Kate and the Yorks to bring a bit of pizazz to the proceedings…

  12. A warm welcome back to you!! You have been missed. I love Camilla’s hat—the color and scale are spot on. I also love the purple coat on Sophie. I’m not a fan of a structured beret. I would have loved a purple or black hat instead.

  13. What a happy surprise! We’ve missed you, HQ!

Camilla’s hat really is a beauty, and it’s always good to see her in saturated colors.

For the mystery of Anne’s hat, I’ll refer you to your own inventory: https://royalhats.net/2020/08/14/inventory-princess-annes-green-hats/ I agree that the hat is overloaded. I’d pick the cut feathers and leave all the other stuff off, although the bow does tie it to the coat.

And while these oversized berets aren’t my favorite style, I think the pale gray hat and shoes work well with the purple coat. Overall, a low-key but pleasant royal Easter appearance.

Looking forward to you future posts, although it seems royal hat-wearing has really dropped off, hasn’t it?

  14. So happy that you are back! I do love the color of Camilla’s hat, but it just looks too big. Anne’s hat is indeed very busy. I don’t like Sarah’s headband, and I don’t care for Sophie’s beret. But I do love that you are back!

  15. Good to have you back! For me, Sophie’s hat is the best of the bunch. Interesting choice on the Queen’s hat to mix straw with velvet, as they tend to be associated with such different seasons.

  16. What a wonderful surprise. So glad to see you back. You’ve been much missed.

Camilla’s hat is lush – beautiful colour. I like Sophie’s very much. I don’t like small perchers on Anne and I’m sorry to say I really don’t like Sarah’s effort

      • I can’t believe Camilla’s hat is 17 years old. Her hats can never really be considered on the small side and I’d love to know how many hats she has, how they’re stored and how many rooms are needed for storage.

  17. Welcome back! I gasped with delight when I received the email notification. As for the hats, Queen Camilla’s was beautiful in color, design, and finish.
